View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct when implementing dietary management and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar levels in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes, that is, type 2 diabetes. It is particularly administered when blood sugar control is inadequate with metformin or pioglitazone alone, or when it is desired to replace treatment with both medications. Management of type 2 diabetes is very important and should include nutritional counseling, weight loss if necessary, and consistent exercise, with these lifestyle modifications enhancing the effectiveness of drug therapy. This medication is used in conjunction with such comprehensive treatment strategies to help improve blood sugar control.

Precautions

This medication is used to treat diabetes and helps control blood sugar. However, it may cause a rare side effect known as severe lactic acidosis, which requires caution. Lactic acidosis is a serious condition caused by excessive accumulation of lactic acid in the body, with symptoms including malaise, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, and abdominal pain. If such symptoms occur, immediately inform a physician and discontinue use of this medication. Additionally, this medication may be risky for patients with impaired kidney or liver function, therefore kidney and liver function tests must be conducted prior to use. Especially, patients with reduced kidney function or severe heart failure should not take this medication. During the course of taking this medication, excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided, and use may be temporarily discontinued in cases of dehydration, serious infection, or around the time of surgery. Furthermore, this medication may cause weight gain, edema, or worsening of heart failure in some patients, so patients should consult their doctor if these symptoms arise. Pregnant or breastfeeding women and children are not recommended to use this medication. While taking this medication, it is essential to regularly check health status through blood sugar, kidney function, liver function, and blood tests, as vitamin B12 deficiency may occur and periodic testing is required. Finally, this medication can interact with other drugs, so any other medications being taken must be reported to a physician or pharmacist. Caution is especially needed when taken with heart medications, diuretics, or antibiotics.
