Efficacy & effects

Emergency contraception effect

View approved original text

Emergency contraceptives help to prevent unwanted pregnancy when unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure occurs, when taken within 72 hours after intercourse. The effectiveness increases the sooner the medication is taken, making it crucial to take it as early as possible. It is important to remember that emergency contraceptives are not a regular contraceptive method but are used in emergency situations. Proper use of emergency contraception can reduce the risk of unexpected pregnancy and provides a sense of security. Therefore, it should be taken immediately after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

Precautions

This medication is to be used temporarily as an emergency contraceptive to prevent pregnancy and cannot replace regular contraceptive methods. Even with this medication, not all pregnancies can be prevented, so if your menstrual period is delayed by more than 5 days or if you experience abnormal bleeding, pregnancy should be confirmed. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication, those who are pregnant, patients with severe liver disease, and those with certain genetic disorders such as lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Patients with a risk of ectopic pregnancy or those with severe digestive disorders, or heart or kidney diseases should use this medication cautiously. After taking the medication, symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, breast tenderness, menstrual delay, or bleeding may occur, but these symptoms usually resolve within 48 hours. This medication should only be used once in a menstrual cycle, and if there is uncertainty about the timing of intercourse, efficacy may decrease. During the next menstrual cycle, non-hormonal contraceptive methods such as condoms must be used until the next period starts. After 72 hours post-intercourse, this medication is no longer effective, and it should not be taken afterward. There remains a risk of thromboembolism, so those with a history of thromboembolism or family history should exercise caution. This medication does not prevent sexually transmitted infections, so separate protective measures are necessary. Some medications that activate liver enzymes may reduce the effectiveness of this medication, so consult a physician if you are taking such medications. This medication should not be used during pregnancy, and if breastfeeding, it is recommended to refrain from breastfeeding for at least 8 hours after taking this medication. In cases of overdose, nausea or bleeding may appear, but there is no specific antidote and treatment should be symptomatic. This medication should be stored in its original packaging to avoid direct sunlight and kept in a secure place out of reach of children.
