This medicine is used to treat osteoporosis in both postmenopausal women and men.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

As Alendronate Sodium, take 70 mg once a week in the morning with a sufficient amount of water at least 30 minutes before consuming food, beverages, or other medications. After taking the medication, remain upright for at least 30 minutes and do not lie down until after the first meal. This medication should be taken immediately upon waking, swallowed with a sufficient amount of water (170 to 230 mL) to reduce the risk of esophageal irritation.

Precautions

This medication can irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, so those with upper gastrointestinal diseases such as gastritis, esophagitis, and esophageal ulcers should take caution before use. When taking this medication, it should be taken with a sufficient amount of water, and you should not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it. Otherwise, severe irritation or damage to the esophagus may occur. If symptoms such as pain in the esophagus, difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or heartburn occur, stop taking the medication immediately and consult a doctor. This medication is not to be used by those with esophageal motility disorders, those who cannot sit up straight or stand, patients with hypocalcemia, those with severe renal failure, or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. During treatment, it is recommended to have an adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, as well as to maintain weight-bearing exercise and a healthy lifestyle. This medication may cause side effects in some patients, such as gastrointestinal disturbances, musculoskeletal pain, headaches, and dizziness, so inform medical personnel if symptoms are severe. Particularly, with long-term use, there is a rare risk of fractures at specific sites of the femur; therefore, if leg pain persists, it is important to see an orthopedic doctor. This medication may interact with other drugs, so if taking calcium supplements, antacids, aspirin, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, they should be taken at different times. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding should not take this medication, and safety in children and adolescents has not been established. Elderly patients can also take this medication, but caution is needed as they may be more sensitive to the drug. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypocalcemia and gastrointestinal adverse reactions may occur, so immediate consultation with medical personnel is necessary. Inducing vomiting is not advised, and it is important to keep the patient upright and stable. Finally, this medication should be kept out of the reach of children, and transferring it to another container should be avoided.
