Summary

Main use
Treatment of gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis
Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
Generally taken orally, 2 tablets twice a day before breakfast and bedtime, regardless of meals. 1) Gastric and duodenal ulcers: either take 2 tablets twice a day or take 4 tablets once a day before bedtime. Particularly, for duodenal ulcer patients, taking 4 tablets twice a day (morning and bedtime) can yield higher treatment rates. For ulcers induced by NSAID use or preventive therapy for gastric and duodenal ulcers during NSAID long-term treatment, the dosage is the same. Typically, diseases induced by NSAIDs usually heal within 8 weeks, but healing periods may occasionally be prolonged depending on the patient. For patients with recurrent ulcers who showed excellent efficacy with short-term therapy, maintain therapy with 2 tablets once a day before bedtime. 2) Gastroesophageal reflux disease: administer 2 tablets twice daily for 8 weeks, or 4 tablets once daily at bedtime. In severe cases of gastroesophageal reflux disease, the dose may be increased to 4 tablets four times a day. 3) Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: initially start treatment with 2 tablets three times a day, and may be increased as needed. In severe cases, the physician may instruct a total of 6 g of ranitidine per day. 4) Peptic ulcers, acute stress ulcers, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to acute mucosal lesions: transition from injection to oral administration as soon as oral intake is possible and take 2 tablets twice daily. 5) Pre-anesthesia medication (prevention of Mendelson's syndrome): administer 2 tablets two hours before anesthesia induction. It is also beneficial to administer 2 tablets the night before surgery.

This medication is used in the treatment of ulcers occurring in the stomach and duodenum, as well as gastritis and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also effective for diseases with excessive gastric acid secretion, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It helps prevent postoperative ulcers and treats gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Additionally, it is administered to prevent Mendelson's syndrome before anesthesia. It is used to improve various gastrointestinal-related disorders.

How to take

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients undergoing dialysis or with kidney function issues. Additionally, patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or its ingredients should not be administered this drug. It is not recommended for patients with a history of acute porphyria, those who have undergone upper gastrointestinal tract surgery, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, premature and newborn infants, or patients who are on a diet that restricts potassium intake. Caution should be exercised when administering this medication to patients with liver function abnormalities, a history of drug allergies, the elderly, or patients with kidney issues. Special attention is required when taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs together, and elderly patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease require regular observation. This medication may mask the symptoms of gastric cancer, so patients with gastric ulcers or newly developed dyspeptic symptoms in middle-aged or older individuals should confirm the absence of malignancy before treatment. Eradication therapy is necessary for patients with Helicobacter pylori-associated gastric and duodenal ulcers. It is also important to exercise caution when administering this medication to severely ill ICU patients, patients with hypophosphatemia, or those with swallowing difficulties. This medication can rarely cause severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylactic shock, so symptoms should be closely monitored during administration. If skin rash, urticaria, angioedema, or bronchospasm occur, administration should be stopped immediately. Reported abnormalities in blood tests include leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and liver function abnormalities, so if unusual symptoms occur, discontinue use and take appropriate measures. Cardiac arrhythmias, gastrointestinal symptoms, dizziness, drowsiness, and mental confusion may also occur, requiring caution. Long-term use should be avoided, and it is advisable to switch to another medication if there is no therapeutic effect. Regular blood, liver, and kidney function tests during the course of treatment are important. There may be an increased risk of pneumonia in the elderly or those with chronic diseases, so caution is warranted. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs, avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery. This medication may interact with other drugs, so disclose any other medications being taken. Special care is needed when combined with certain anticoagulants or antibiotics and should be closely monitored through blood tests. It is safest for pregnant or breastfeeding women to avoid using this medication. Safety in children has not been established, so administration is not recommended. In case of overdose, emergency treatments such as inducing vomiting or gastric lavage may be needed, and blood dialysis can be performed if necessary. This medication may promote bacterial growth in the stomach by reducing gastric acid secretion, so ocular examinations may be necessary with long-term use.
