Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used to effectively control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. Additionally, it helps to reduce the risk of mortality from myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases in high-risk patients aged 55 and older. It is particularly recommended for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, transient ischemic attacks, or organ damage from diabetes. Through these effects, it contributes to reducing the overall risk of cardiovascular disease and maintaining healthy heart function. Therefore, this medication is used for the treatment of hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular risk.
As Telmisartan, 40 mg should be taken orally once daily with water, and it can be taken regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may be effective. If necessary, the dose can be increased to 80 mg once daily. This drug shows additional blood pressure-lowering effects when combined with thiazide diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide. This drug can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn during pregnancy, so if pregnancy is confirmed, it should be discontinued immediately. It should not be used in cases of allergic reaction to this drug, during pregnancy, severely impaired liver function, a history of angioedema, or in patients with diabetes or severe kidney impairment. Caution should be exercised in elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, slightly impaired liver function, or with heart valve disease or cerebrovascular disorders. While taking this medication, various side effects may occur, such as infections, decreased blood pressure, liver function abnormalities, kidney function impairment, skin rashes, and muscle pain. Any unusual symptoms should be consulted with a physician immediately. Special attention should be paid to the possibility of severe symptoms such as excessively low blood pressure, angioedema, hyperkalemia, acute kidney failure, shock, interstitial pneumonia, and rhabdomyolysis. Patients with impaired kidney function should frequently monitor potassium and creatinine levels in the blood, and must ensure normal hydration and sodium status before taking this medication. When taken with other antihypertensive drugs or certain medications, the risk of side effects due to interactions may increase, so all medications being taken should be reported to a physician. This medication is not recommended for nursing women and has not been established for safety and efficacy in children and adolescents under 18 years of age. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, and acute kidney failure may occur, requiring immediate medical assistance and careful monitoring of blood pressure and blood tests. This drug should be kept out of reach of children, preferably the packaging should be opened just before administration, and care should be taken in driving or operating hazardous machinery due to the possibility of dizziness or fainting.
