This medication is used when oral administration of folic acid is difficult or when there is a need to quickly correct a severe deficiency. It helps to prevent and treat issues arising from folic acid deficiency.

How it is given

Adult administration

Treatment of severe folic acid deficiency: Administer 1 ampoule (5mg of folic acid) daily. Prevention of folic acid deficiency: Administer 1 ampoule (5mg of folic acid) 1-3 times a week. Administer intravenously or intramuscularly. The treatment duration should be determined based on the degree of folic acid deficiency, clinical status, and laboratory diagnostic tests.

Precautions

This medication is in the form of glass ampoules, so care must be taken to cut it carefully to avoid the inclusion of glass shards. Extra caution should be exercised when used in children or the elderly. Persons allergic to this medication or any of its components should not use it. Also, it should not be administered to patients with certain types of anemia due to vitamin B12 deficiency. Before using this medication, vitamin B12 deficiency should be tested to reduce the risk of nerve damage. High doses may cause gastrointestinal disturbances, and severe diarrhea may occur when used with certain antineoplastic agents. Rarely, allergic reactions such as skin rashes, itching, and shortness of breath may occur, so caution is advised. Very high doses may cause sleep disturbances or mood changes. Blood tests and confirmation of vitamin B12 levels are necessary prior to treatment, and if vitamin B12 deficiency is suspected, this medication should not be used. Caution should be exercised when used with antiepileptics as seizures may worsen. Some antineoplastic agents may interfere with this medicine's action, so consultation with a specialist is necessary when co-administering. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, high doses should be avoided and should not exceed 5mg per day. Overdose may present symptoms such as nausea, loss of appetite, nightmares, and mood changes, so caution is necessary. It should not be used if it has been degraded due to exposure to high temperatures or light.
