Treatment for essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used to lower blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of major cardiovascular diseases and mortality, such as myocardial infarction and stroke, in high-risk patients over the age of 55, including those with a history of coronary artery disease, stroke, peripheral artery disease, or end-organ damage due to diabetes. This could significantly lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, this drug is effectively used not only for controlling hypertension but also for preventing cardiovascular diseases.
1. Essential Hypertension Telmisartan should be administered orally once daily at a dose of 40 mg, taken with water, and can be taken regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, a dose of 20 mg may be effective once daily. If necessary, the dose can be increased to 80 mg once daily. When increasing the dose, maximum blood pressure-lowering effect is observed 4 to 8 weeks after starting treatment. 2. Reduction of cardiovascular disease risk This drug is advised to be taken orally once daily at a dose of 80 mg with water, and can be taken regardless of meals. The effect of reducing morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases at doses below 80 mg is not known. When starting treatment with this medication for the purpose of reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, monitoring blood pressure is recommended, and appropriate adjustment of antihypertensive medications may be necessary.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn, particularly during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. This drug should not be used in individuals with allergies to this medication or its ingredients, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver dysfunction, certain liver diseases, hereditary angioedema patients, diabetes, or severe renal impairment. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, liver dysfunction, heart valve disease, ischemic heart disease, gastrointestinal disease, renal artery hypertension, severe renal impairment, etc. should take it with caution and regularly monitor blood pressure and renal function. If symptoms of angioedema occur, stop taking the medication immediately and seek emergency treatment. Regular blood tests are necessary due to risks of hyperkalemia and renal function decline. Caution is needed when taking this medication with other antihypertensives as it may increase their blood pressure-lowering effects, and it may cause renal function decline, electrolyte abnormalities, or blood pressure fluctuations when combined with certain medications, so consultation with a doctor is advised. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not take this medication, and breastfeeding mothers should avoid taking it or stop breastfeeding. The safety and efficacy in children have not been established, so it is not recommended for them. Caution should be used in the elderly due to the risk of stroke from excessive blood pressure lowering. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, and acute renal failure may occur, and immediate medical attention should be sought. This medication is not removed by dialysis, so caution is essential. Store in a tightly closed container away from air and moisture, and it is advisable to open the package just before use.
