Reduced risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improved hyperlipidemia
This medication helps adult and pediatric patients with various risk factors related to cardiovascular diseases. In particular, it reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, such as myocardial infarction or stroke, and is used for improving the condition of patients undergoing vascular surgery and those with angina pectoris. It also serves as an adjunct therapy for patients with hyperlipidemia or dyslipidemia that is difficult to control with diet alone, effectively lowering total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels while increasing levels of good cholesterol, HDL. It is safe for pediatric patients with familial hypercholesterolemia aged 10 to 17 years, helping to lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Overall, this medication is used to improve cardiovascular health and blood lipid levels.
The recommended initial dose for patients with hyperlipidemia is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily. If greater reduction in LDL cholesterol is needed, it can be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This medication is administered within a dosage range of 10 to 80 mg once daily. After starting treatment and adjusting the dosage, lipid levels should be analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks, and the dosage should be adjusted accordingly. The treatment goal is to reduce LDL cholesterol levels; thus, it is recommended to use LDL cholesterol for assessing treatment response at the beginning of treatment and for evaluating treatment responsiveness. However, if LDL cholesterol levels cannot be monitored, total cholesterol levels may be used to track treatment response. For patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dosage is 10 to 80 mg once daily, and this medication is used in conjunction with other lipid-lowering treatments (e.g., LDL apheresis) or when such treatments are not possible.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (10 to 17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, and the recommended maximum dose is 20 mg once daily. Dosage adjustments should be made with an interval of more than 4 weeks.
This medication may cause muscle-related adverse effects; if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs or if creatine kinase levels rise significantly, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Particularly, patients with serious infections, hypotension, prior major surgery or trauma, or liver or kidney dysfunction may need to temporarily pause or stop treatment. Patients with a history of allergic reactions to this medication, active liver disease, severe muscle disorders, those who are pregnant or nursing, children under 10 years, and patients taking certain medications should not use it. Patients with alcoholism, a history of liver disease, impaired kidney function, hypothyroidism, and elderly patients, who are at higher risk of muscle damage, require careful evaluation before use. During treatment, regular liver function tests and muscle-related tests should be conducted, and any abnormal symptoms should be reported to medical personnel immediately. This medication can interact with several drugs; therefore, patients should inform their doctor or pharmacist if they are taking other medications. Particular caution is needed when used in conjunction with certain antibiotics, antifungal agents, HIV medications, some antihypertensive drugs, and hypoglycemic agents. Women of childbearing age should use appropriate contraception during use and immediately discontinue use if pregnant. Nursing women should avoid using this medication, and special caution is necessary for children and elderly patients as well. There is no specific antidote for overdose; treatment should be symptomatic, and it should be stored out of reach of children.
