Improvement of Alzheimer's type dementia symptoms
This medication is used in the treatment of Alzheimer's type dementia symptoms. It helps alleviate memory decline and cognitive function deterioration in patients. The goal is to enhance functionality in daily life and improve quality of life.
As Donepezil Hydrochloride, administer 5 mg once daily before bedtime. If unusual dreams, nightmares, or sleep disturbances occur, consider taking this medication in the morning. Donepezil's concentration reaches a steady state 15 days after administration, and the frequency of adverse reactions may be influenced by the rate of dosage increase, so continue administering 5 mg for 4 to 6 weeks. Evaluate clinical responses during this period.
There is no experience using this medication in children.
This medication should not be used by individuals allergic to specific ingredients or by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Additionally, it should not be administered to patients with genetic lactose intolerance. Those with heart disease or issues with heart rhythm should be cautious when using this medication, as it may cause heart rhythm abnormalities. Patients with a history of peptic ulcer or those currently taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should closely monitor their gastrointestinal condition. Individuals with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease should be cautious, as respiratory symptoms may worsen. Patients with extrapyramidal disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, should use this medication carefully, as symptoms may worsen. This medication contains certain dyes that may cause allergic reactions, so individuals who are sensitive to them should be cautious. If severe dizziness, fainting, heart problems, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver function abnormalities, neurological symptoms, muscle issues, or respiratory distress occur while taking this medication, it should be discontinued immediately and a doctor should be consulted. Generally, mild side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, insomnia, and decreased appetite may occur, and most of them are temporary. This medication is approved for the treatment of Alzheimer's type dementia only and should not be used for other types of dementia or memory decline. Patients with heart disease or a history of QT interval prolongation may require cardiac monitoring. Caution is advised as it may affect the ability to drive or operate machinery, especially during the initial period of administration or upon dosage changes. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is important to inform the doctor or pharmacist about any other medications being taken. It is advisable for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to use this medication, and if necessary, it should be decided after consultation with a specialist. Safety in children has not been established, so it should not be administered to them. In case of overdose, dangerous symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, and respiratory distress may occur, requiring immediate medical attention, and atropine may be used as an antidote. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children and should not be transferred to another container.
