Improvement of selenium deficiency
This medication is used to supply selenium to patients with selenium deficiency that cannot be supplemented by nutrition alone.
Administer 100 μg of selenium by intramuscular or intravenous injection daily. If necessary, the dose may be increased up to 200 μg daily. When administered as an adjunct to the basic total parenteral nutrition (TPN) injection, use 100 μg of selenium daily.
This drug contains selenium, so it should not be used in patients with symptoms of selenium toxicity. Patients with hypersensitivity to this drug or its components should not be administered this medication. Pain or allergic reactions may occur rarely during injection, so caution is required. If symptoms such as dermatitis, foul smell during sweating or respiration, hair loss, anxiety, or vomiting occur, the use should be discontinued immediately. When mixing with other intravenous solutions, care must be taken to prevent the formation of precipitates, especially when the acidity (pH) of the solution is low or if mixed with reducing agents like vitamin C. If precipitates or color changes are observed, the drug should not be used, and should always be verified for safety. Since this drug contains sodium, patients on a low-sodium diet should consider this. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should be administered this drug only if the benefits of treatment are deemed greater than the risks. Nursing mothers should avoid administering this drug as its safety has not been established, and it is recommended to discontinue breastfeeding or the medication. In case of overdose, symptoms such as a garlic-like odor from the mouth, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may occur, and long-term overdose may affect nail and hair growth and cause neurological disorders. In cases of overdose, treatments such as gastric lavage, inducing urination, and administering high doses of vitamin C may be required, and in very severe cases, dialysis may be necessary to remove selenium. Dimercaprol, which can increase the toxicity of this drug, should not be used in cases of overdose. This drug should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in a cool, dry place shielded from light at room temperature. After opening, it should be used immediately, and transferring to another container is not advisable for quality maintenance and safety reasons.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This drug should be stored in a sealed container to prevent air and moisture from entering. The storage temperature should be maintained between 1 and 30 degrees, and it is best to store it in a dark place away from direct sunlight.
