Improving nutritional status through zinc supplementation
Patients receiving Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) may become deficient in zinc, necessitating zinc supplementation. Zinc is an essential mineral important for maintaining immune function and skin health, and deficiency can lead to delayed wound healing or decreased immunity. Therefore, appropriate zinc supplementation during TPN helps to prevent these issues and aids in patient recovery.
Use as prescribed by a physician, adjusting the dosage according to plasma trace element levels. Metabolically stable TPN patients: 2.5 to 4 mg/day Adult patients with fluid loss from the intestine: an additional 12.2 mg/L (loss of fluid) or an additional 17.1 mg/kg (amount excreted) Acute burn condition: 4.5 to 6 mg/day
Children under 5 years: 100 µg/kg/day Premature infants weighing 3 kg or less: 300 µg/kg/day
This medication should not be injected directly into the peripheral vein without dilution. Injecting directly into the peripheral vein may cause phlebitis or can lead to rapid intravenous administration causing damage to the kidneys. The amount of zinc in this medication is very small, so toxic symptoms are unlikely to occur. When mixing this medication with TPN solutions, it is recommended to work in a cleanroom environment to maintain sterility. For non-oral medications, it is important to visually check for any precipitation or discoloration before administration. Administering zinc together with copper may reduce the plasma copper concentration, so the concentrations of both elements should be measured at regular intervals and taken into account for the next dosing. This medication is eliminated through the small intestine and kidneys, so patients with abnormalities in these excretory organs should consider the possibility of zinc accumulation in the body. When administering this medication to pregnant women or women of childbearing potential, it should only be used when the benefits outweigh the risks. Since zinc can cross the placenta and may be present in breast milk, pregnant and nursing mothers should use it cautiously. In cases of overdose, symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, dizziness, abdominal pain, drowsiness, and ataxia, which can be severe and potentially fatal. Calcium supplementation may help to prevent toxic symptoms of zinc. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original packaging in a dry place at room temperature. Since it does not contain preservatives, any unused portions must be discarded.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to prevent air or moisture ingress, and it is best to keep it at a temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius at room temperature. This helps maintain the effectiveness of the medication over time.
