This medication is used for the prevention and treatment of vitamin C deficiency, particularly scurvy, in acute situations or when oral intake is not feasible. It is also beneficial in cases where there is an increased requirement for vitamin C, such as in pregnant or breastfeeding women and individuals engaged in strenuous physical labor. Conditions related to vitamin C deficiency or metabolic disorders include capillary bleeding, adverse drug reactions, promotion of bone matrix formation and healing during fractures, pigmentation such as melasma and freckles, and photosensitive dermatitis. This drug can be used to improve bodily functions and enhance health when vitamin C is needed in these various circumstances.

How it is given

Adult administration

As Vitamin C, 50 to 1,000 mg is administered subcutaneously, intramuscularly, or intravenously in divided doses once or several times a day. Adjust dosage appropriately based on age and symptoms.

Precautions

This drug should be handled carefully as glass fragments may get mixed when opening the injection vial. Extra caution is required when used in children and the elderly. It should not be administered to patients with allergies to this drug or specific diseases. For example, patients with oxalate excretion abnormalities, such as primary hyperoxaluria or mediterranean anemia, gout, cystinuria, and certain enzyme deficiencies, may be at risk. Additionally, patients with kidney stones should not take this drug in high doses. Possible side effects when taking this drug include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, abdominal pain, fatigue, flushing, headache, insomnia, etc. The risk of diarrhea and kidney stones may increase with high-dose usage, and diuretic effects may also occur. Patients with specific enzyme deficiencies should be cautious of hemolysis. Overdosage may cause kidney stones or precipitates in the urinary tract, so the appropriate dosage should be maintained. This drug is usually taken orally; however, injections should only be used in acute situations or when gastrointestinal absorption is difficult, and if possible, switching to oral intake is recommended. Since it may interact with other drugs, caution is needed when taken together with aspirin, smoking, alcohol, iron supplements, some anticonvulsants, oral contraceptives, etc. During pregnancy, the effects on the fetus are not clear, so it should be used only when necessary and high-dose intake should be avoided. This drug can also be transmitted through breast milk, but in normal doses, it poses little risk to the baby. It may affect some clinical test results, so it should be disclosed before testing. In case of overdose, diarrhea and kidney stones may occur, so if symptoms arise, use should be stopped immediately and treatment sought. When administered by injection, there may be pain at the injection site, and extra caution should be taken when administering to neonates or children. If pain or blood reflux is felt while inserting the needle, it should be removed immediately. Venous injections should be done slowly to reduce dizziness or vascular pain. This drug should be stored out of reach of children and kept in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Also, it should be stored in its original container to prevent misuse or deterioration in quality.

Storage

This medication is sensitive to light, so it should be stored in a container that does not allow light to penetrate. It is also important to keep the drug at refrigerated temperatures between 2 degrees and 8 degrees Celsius to maintain its effectiveness.
