This medication is used in adult patients suffering from acute coronary syndrome who are taking clopidogrel and aspirin together. It is particularly effective in patients with unstable angina or non-Q-wave myocardial infarction who have undergone medical treatment, coronary intervention, or coronary artery bypass graft surgery. This therapy helps improve atherosclerotic symptoms such as cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Additionally, it is safely used in patients with atrial fibrillation who have vascular risk factors and are not suitable for vitamin K antagonists and have a low risk of bleeding, reducing the risk of stroke and thromboembolism. In short, this medication is a very effective treatment for reducing the risk of cardiovascular complications and stroke.

Precautions

This medication works to prevent blood clotting and inhibit thrombus formation. However, taking this medication may prolong the time for bleeding to stop; thus, if bleeding lasts unusually long or if the bleeding site appears abnormal, it is important to inform the doctor immediately. You must inform healthcare professionals that you are taking this medication before undergoing surgery or starting new medications. People with genetically reduced function of a specific enzyme (CYP2C19) may have reduced effectiveness of this medication, and in such cases, consulting with a doctor is necessary. Furthermore, taking this medication with certain drugs or alcohol may increase the risk of bleeding, so individuals who consume alcohol regularly should consult with a specialist. This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, individuals allergic to this medication or its ingredients, those with bleeding disorders, patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function, and women in late pregnancy or breastfeeding should refrain from taking it. Patients with gastrointestinal bleeding or a tendency to bleed should take this medication cautiously. Because the risk of bleeding may be higher, individuals should be screened immediately if symptoms of bleeding are suspected. Especially, patients scheduled for surgery should stop taking this medication 5-7 days prior to surgery, resuming as necessary thereafter. Caution is also warranted if taken with other antiplatelet agents or medications that affect blood coagulation, as this may further increase the risk of bleeding. This medication is not recommended for children or adolescents under 18 years of age, and elderly patients may experience adverse reactions more readily, so their condition should be monitored closely. Overdosing on this medication can lead to severe bleeding and, since there is no specific antidote, platelet transfusions or other treatments may be necessary for severe bleeding. During usage, if symptoms such as bleeding, skin rash, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, headache, or other abnormal symptoms occur, immediate consultation with a doctor is required, and regular blood tests to check for bleeding risk and blood condition are important. The risk of gastrointestinal bleeding increases when this medication is taken with alcohol; thus, it is advisable to avoid alcohol. Additionally, interactions with certain medications may occur, so you should always inform healthcare providers if you are taking other medications.
