SelenTab Injection (Sodium Selenite, Trihydrate)

Adult administration

Administer 100 μg of selenium by intramuscular or intravenous injection daily. If necessary, the dose may be increased up to 200 μg per day. When administered as an additional dose in total parenteral nutrition (TPN) basic injection, the daily dose should be 100 μg of selenium.

This drug should not be used in patients with selenium poisoning due to its selenium content. It should not be administered to patients with allergic reactions to this drug or its ingredients. Rarely, pain or allergic reactions may occur when this drug is injected, so caution is advised. If symptoms such as dermatitis, increased body odor, hair loss, anxiety, or vomiting occur, administration should be stopped immediately. When mixed with other intravenous solutions, care must be taken to prevent the formation of precipitates, and if the acidity of the solution is too low or mixed with solutions containing reducing agents like Vitamin C, selenium may precipitate and not be absorbed in the body. After mixing with other drugs, it is essential to check for precipitation or color changes, and in case of any abnormalities, it should not be used. This drug contains sodium, so patients who require a low-sodium diet should take this into consideration. Safety has not been established for pregnant women, and fetal malformations have been reported in animal studies, so it should only be used when the therapeutic benefits outweigh the risks in women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Safety has not been established for nursing mothers either, so it is advisable to discontinue nursing or the administration of the drug. In case of overdose, garlic smell from the mouth, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain may appear, and prolonged overdose may affect the growth of nails and hair and cause neurological disorders. In case of overdose, measures such as gastric lavage, diuresis induction, and high-dose Vitamin C intake should be taken, and in cases of severe overdose, dialysis may need to be performed to remove selenium. In this situation, dimercaprol should not be used as it can exacerbate selenium toxicity. Keep out of reach of children, and it is important to maintain the packaging and store it in a cool, dry place at room temperature. It should be used immediately after opening, and caution should be taken because transferring to another container may compromise quality.

Mild side effects

Injection site pain, dermatitis, offensive odor when sweating or breathing, hair loss, restlessness, vomiting, garlic smell from the mouth, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, influence on nail and hair growth, peripheral neuropathy.

This drug should be stored in a sealed container to prevent air and moisture from entering. It is important to maintain the temperature between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius and to store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
