Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood pressure control for essential hypertension

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

The combined therapy of amlodipine and losartan is used when blood pressure control is difficult in patients with essential hypertension. This medication effectively lowers blood pressure, reducing the burden on the heart and blood vessels. The two components work together to dilate blood vessels and help regulate sodium and water in the body, maintaining stable blood pressure. If sufficient blood pressure control is difficult with monotherapy, this combination therapy can lead to improvement. Consequently, it helps lower the risk of cardiovascular complications.

For patients whose blood pressure is not controlled with amlodipine/losartan combination therapy, a dose of this medication of 5/50/12.5 mg is given, and the dosage should be adjusted considering the patient's blood pressure response at intervals of more than 2 weeks. Precautions

This medication can pose serious risks to fetuses and newborns during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Patients with impaired liver function or progressive liver disease may experience serious side effects, such as hepatic coma, while using this medication. Patients with severe kidney disease should use this medication cautiously as the diuretic component may increase blood urea nitrogen levels, potentially burdening kidney function. Patients who are hypersensitive to any component of this medication, those with certain genetic lactose intolerance, pregnant women or women who might become pregnant, and nursing mothers should not use this product. Patients with severe hypotension, severe liver or kidney failure, specific heart diseases, or a history of angioedema should not take this medication. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, kidney failure, liver impairment, heart valve stenosis, etc., should have their blood pressure and electrolyte status monitored closely when receiving this medication. As this medication lowers blood pressure, symptoms such as dizziness, headache, and hypotension may occur, along with potential side effects like indigestion, constipation, and fatigue. During the course of treatment, potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium should not be taken without consulting a physician. Use of this medication is advised against during pregnancy or breastfeeding; if it is absolutely necessary, consultation with a physician is required. Safety and effectiveness of this medication have not been established in pediatric patients under 18 years of age, so it is not recommended. In elderly patients, it is important to start with a low dose and administer cautiously to prevent hypotension or electrolyte imbalances. In case of overdose, severe hypotension, altered consciousness, and arrhythmias may occur, so immediate medical attention is necessary. This medication should be stored away from direct sunlight in a cool, dry place, and out of reach of children.
