Effectiveness in treating hypertension, angina (stable, variant) and myocardial ischemia, and reducing the risk of hospitalization due to angina and the risk of coronary angioplasty.
This medication is used to treat hypertension and myocardial ischemia caused by stable angina and variant angina. It also helps reduce the risk of hospitalization due to angina and the associated risks of coronary angioplasty in patients with documented coronary artery disease and without heart failure or ejection fraction below 40%. Thus, it is effective in alleviating symptoms of cardiovascular disease and lowering the risk of complications.
The recommended dosage for adults is 5 mg orally once daily as amlodipine, which may be increased to a maximum of 10 mg per day depending on the patient's response. Adjustments may be made according to age and symptoms.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. Individuals allergic to this medicine or similar types of medication should not take it. Also, it is not administered to nursing women, patients with severe liver dysfunction, those with severe aortic stenosis, and patients in shock. Patients with severe hypotension, those requiring dialysis due to renal failure, the elderly, and women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should use this medication cautiously. When taking this medication, side effects such as flushing, fatigue, edema, palpitations, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, abdominal pain, and nausea may occur. Rarely, various adverse reactions such as hypotension, vasculitis, neurological abnormalities, erectile dysfunction, dry mouth, liver dysfunction, and skin rashes have been reported. Patients with heart failure may need to be cautious as pulmonary edema may increase when using this medication, and patients with liver dysfunction may require dosage adjustment. This medication works by gradually lowering blood pressure, so it is not suitable for the treatment of acute angina. There may be interactions when taking this medication with others, particularly certain antibiotics, antihypertensives, grapefruit juice, and medications affecting liver metabolism, so consultation with a physician or pharmacist is necessary. Women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid using this medication unless its safety has been confirmed through consultation with a specialist. In children, efficacy has been confirmed in those aged 6 years and older, but safety and efficacy in children under 6 years old are not established. In cases of overdose, severe hypotension and shock may occur, so immediate medical attention is necessary if symptoms arise. While it is known that this medication does not significantly affect the ability to drive or operate machinery, individual variations may exist, so caution is advised.
