Short-term weight loss adjunct therapy for obesity (high body mass index and risk factors)
This medication is used for obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or for those with a BMI of 27 or higher who have risk factors such as diabetes or hypertension. It is used short-term as an adjunct to weight loss therapy based on calorie restriction when weight loss is not achievable through appropriate dietary or exercise regimens. This medication should be taken alone without the use of other appetite suppressants. It thus assists in improving weight loss effects by complementing diet and exercise in obesity management.
Phenmetrazine Tartrate: 35 mg per dose, taken orally 2-3 times a day one hour before meals. The dosage should be the minimum effective dose and adjusted individually. For some patients, 17.5 mg once a day may be appropriate. The dosage should not exceed 70 mg per dose or 3 times a day. It should be administered short-term (within 4 weeks), and if satisfactory weight loss occurs within the initial 4 weeks, treatment may continue.
This medication should only be used alone for a short period, as using it with other appetite suppressants can increase the risk of serious cardiovascular diseases. Long-term use of this medication may significantly increase the risk of serious lung disease called pulmonary arterial hypertension, so if respiratory distress or angina symptoms occur, the medication should be stopped immediately and medical evaluation should be obtained. It is important to carefully evaluate cardiac status prior to using this medication, as there is a risk of heart diseases such as valvular heart disease; it is not recommended for patients with known heart problems. Patients with certain conditions, including sympathetic nervous system hypersensitivity, cardiovascular diseases, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, and those who are psychologically unstable should refrain from using this medication. Children under 16 years of age and women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication. Patients with hypertension or diabetes should use this medication cautiously, and particularly diabetic patients may require adjustments to their insulin dosage. During the use of this medication, central nervous system side effects such as anxiety, insomnia, headache, and dizziness, as well as cardiovascular side effects such as palpitations and increased blood pressure may occur, requiring caution. In the case of overdose, severe toxicity symptoms and mental disorders may arise, thus the medication must be used at the minimal effective dose as directed by a physician. Since this medication acts on the central nervous system, caution is needed when performing hazardous tasks such as driving or operating machinery. Its safety has not been established for pregnant or breastfeeding women, and caution is advised during breastfeeding as well. This medication is classified as a controlled substance with a risk of dependence and abuse, and sudden cessation after prolonged high-dose use may lead to significant fatigue and depression. When storing, keep it in a secure place out of the reach of children, and avoid concomitant use with other appetite suppressants.
