Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood pressure control for essential hypertension

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

Essential hypertension is a condition characterized by persistently high blood pressure, which places a burden on the cardiovascular system. When blood pressure control is insufficient with either telmisartan or amlodipine monotherapy, this medication is used effectively to lower and manage blood pressure. This helps to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke and improves overall vascular health.

How to take

Adult dose

The recommended dosage of this medication is one tablet once daily, to be taken with water regardless of meals. It is recommended to take it at the same time each day, if possible (e.g., in the morning). Dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with kidney impairment, liver impairment, or the elderly, and patients with severe kidney impairment or those over 75 years should start with a lower dose and gradually increase.

Child dose

Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients under 18 years have not been established, thus administration of this medication is not recommended.

Precautions

This medication can pose serious risks to the fetus during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, thus it should not be taken by pregnant women or those who may become pregnant. If pregnancy is confirmed, this medication should be discontinued as soon as possible. This medication should be avoided or used with caution in patients with certain conditions. For example, those allergic to any components of this medication, patients with biliary obstruction, severe liver disease, severe hypotension, or serious heart conditions should not take it. Additionally, caution is needed for patients with diabetes or severe kidney disease, as it may pose risks when combined with certain other medications. Patients with impaired liver, heart, or kidney function should use this medication more cautiously. In patients with liver impairment, metabolism of the medication may be slowed, potentially requiring dosage adjustments. Caution is also needed in cases of heart failure or valvular heart disease. Side effects such as dizziness and peripheral edema are common, and serious adverse reactions such as fainting have been reported rarely. If side effects occur, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. Symptoms of hypotension, such as excessively low blood pressure, may occur; therefore, especially in patients taking diuretics or those who may be dehydrated, the state should be carefully checked before taking the medication, following healthcare professionals' directives. There is a risk of elevated potassium levels in the blood, so when this medication is taken with other drugs that may raise potassium, monitoring through blood tests is necessary. Patients with reduced kidney function should also receive regular blood tests to check kidney function and electrolyte status. This medication can increase the risk of side effects when taken with other antihypertensive drugs, so be sure to inform healthcare providers when taking it with other medications. In particular, avoid taking it with grapefruit juice, as it can excessively enhance the medication's effect. Drowsiness or dizziness may occur while taking this medication, and caution is advised when driving or operating hazardous machinery. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children, so it is not recommended for use in this population. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of the medication, so caution is necessary when prescribing it, and dosage adjustments may be required. In cases of overdose, severe hypotension, dizziness, and cardiac issues may occur; therefore, avoid exceeding the prescribed dosage, and visit a medical facility immediately if any adverse symptoms appear. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and it is recommended not to transfer to another container, opening the packaging just before consumption.
