  • Recurrent herpes labialis
View approved original text

Antiviral agents are used for the initial treatment of recurrent herpes labialis. This medication helps heal lesions by inhibiting the replication of the herpes virus and shortens the duration of symptoms. Starting treatment early is effective in alleviating pain and discomfort and reducing the frequency of recurrences. Additionally, it has fewer side effects during use, allowing for safe administration. Therefore, it is important to begin treatment promptly when initial symptoms of recurrent herpes labialis appear.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by individuals with certain skin infections. For example, if there are bacterial infections such as tuberculosis or syphilis, fungal infections such as candidiasis or tinea, or other viral infections excluding herpes simplex, using this medication may worsen symptoms. Additionally, those who are allergic to this medication or any of its components, or have had hypersensitivity reactions, should not use it. Immunocompromised patients, such as those after a bone marrow transplant or living with AIDS, should also avoid using this medication. Individuals with perforation in the eardrum, severe skin ulcers, severe burns or frostbite cases, dermatitis around the mouth, acne vulgaris, rosacea, those under 18 years old, lactating women, and individuals with a history of myocardial infarction should not use this medication. This medication should not be applied to sensitive areas such as eyes, nose, mouth, and genitals. During the use of this medication, there could be interactions with other drugs, so it is advisable not to take it concurrently with acyclovir given systemically. Also, unless under special circumstances, it is safer to avoid breastfeeding during the use of this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consult their doctor before using this medication, and elderly patients should be cautious as the risk of side effects is higher. If any symptoms such as skin dryness, peeling, burning sensation, tingling, erythema, pigmentation changes, or any other reactions occur during its use, discontinue use immediately and consult a specialist. When used for an extended period or on large areas, serious side effects such as adrenal suppression, glaucoma, or cataracts may occur, so caution is necessary. This medication is typically used for up to 5 days, and if symptoms do not improve or worsen, it is essential to consult a specialist. This medication should only be used for herpes labialis around the lips, and care should be taken not to confuse it with other skin conditions. It is important to adhere to the prescribed dosage and administration, and not to use it when there are no symptoms. This medication is not intended to prevent transmission to others or to prevent recurrence. During use, there might be skin irritation or allergic reactions, so if such symptoms develop, use must be discontinued immediately. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and store it in its original container with the lid tightly closed.
