Treatment of male pattern baldness
This medication is used to treat male pattern baldness in adult males, specifically androgenetic alopecia.
Typically, finasteride is administered orally at a dose of 1 mg once daily, with or without food. There is no evidence that increasing the dose enhances efficacy. Generally, treatment effects can be seen after taking the medication for more than 3 months, and continuous use is recommended to maintain treatment efficacy. The treatment period and efficacy should be continuously evaluated. If treatment is stopped, the effects will disappear within 12 months.
This medicine should not be used in pediatric patients or females. Particularly, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should avoid even handling broken fragments of this medication. The ingredients of this drug can be absorbed through the skin and may harm male fetuses. Since this medication is primarily metabolized in the liver, patients with liver dysfunction should use it with caution. Additionally, patients with lipid metabolism disorders such as hyperlipidemia, diabetic dyslipidemia, or pancreatitis should also be administered with care. During treatment, symptoms such as depression or mood changes may occur, so if such symptoms arise, consult a healthcare professional immediately. Also, be cautious as sexual function-related side effects like decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculation disorders may occur. Pregnant women must not take or come into contact with this medication, as it poses a risk to the genital development of male fetuses. Therefore, women who plan to become pregnant or are pregnant should avoid contact with this drug. If symptoms such as breast pain, breast enlargement, lumps, or nipple discharge occur while taking this medication, inform a doctor immediately. Moreover, the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels may decrease in blood tests, so care must be taken in interpreting test results. This medication has relatively few interactions with other drugs, but if you are taking other medications, inform your healthcare provider. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so follow the prescribed dosage strictly. When storing, keep out of reach of children, and it is advisable not to transfer to another container. This medication contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance should take caution before use.
