Reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improves hypercholesterolemia
This drug helps reduce various risks of cardiovascular disease. For example, it reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with risk factors for coronary heart disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it contributes to reducing the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular surgeries, congestive heart failure, and angina in patients with existing coronary heart disease. It is also used to lower levels of cholesterol and triglycerides and increase HDL cholesterol in patients with primary and mixed hyperlipidemia. In children, it helps control cholesterol levels in specific familial hypercholesterolemia cases. Therefore, this drug is effectively used for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and the treatment of dyslipidemia.
Start with 10 mg once daily; if more LDL cholesterol reduction is required, can begin with 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. Typically, dosing ranges from 10 to 80 mg once daily. The initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on treatment goals and patient response, with lipid levels analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks after starting treatment to adjust the dosage accordingly. For homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dose is 10 to 80 mg once daily and may be given in conjunction with other lipid-lowering therapies (e.g., LDL apheresis) or when such therapies are not possible.
For pediatric patients (ages 10 to 17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 20 mg once daily. Dosage adjustments should occur at intervals of at least 4 weeks.
