Improvement of selenium deficiency
In cases of selenium deficiency in patients where nutritional intake alone is insufficient for supplementation, selenium supplementation can improve deficiency states. This medication effectively provides selenium to supplement the lacking nutrients and helps in the recovery from related symptoms.
As selenium, administer 100 μg daily by intramuscular or intravenous injection. If necessary, the dose may be increased up to 200 μg per day. If administered as an adjunct to total parenteral nutrition (TPN) basic injection, a daily dose of 100 μg as selenium should be used.
This medication contains selenium; therefore, it should not be used in patients with symptoms of selenium toxicity. It should not be administered to patients with allergic reactions to this medication or its components. Pain or allergic reactions may occur rarely upon injection; caution is advised. If symptoms such as dermatitis, foul odor during sweating or breathing, hair loss, anxiety, or vomiting occur, use should be discontinued immediately. When mixing with other intravenous solutions, care must be taken to avoid precipitation, and if the acidity of the solution is too low or used with vitamin C, selenium may precipitate and not be absorbed in the body. When mixing with other medications, always check for precipitation or color changes, and if abnormalities are present, it should not be used. This medication contains sodium; therefore, patients requiring a low-sodium diet should take this into consideration. In pregnant women, the possibility of fetal malformation has been reported in animal studies; therefore, it should be administered cautiously only when the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks. This medication may be excreted in breast milk, but its safety for nursing mothers has not been established; therefore, in cases of nursing, the administration of the medication should be discontinued or breastfeeding should be discontinued. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as a garlic-like odor from the mouth, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may occur, and chronic use may affect nail and hair growth and lead to neurological disorders. In cases of excessive overdose, treatments such as gastric lavage, urine induction, and high-dose vitamin C administration should be administered, and in very severe cases, selenium should be removed via dialysis. The drug Dimercaprol may exacerbate selenium toxicity and should not be used. This medication must be kept out of reach of children and stored in a dry place at room temperature while maintaining its packaging.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to avoid exposure to air and moisture. The appropriate storage temperature is between 15 degrees to 25 degrees, and it should be kept away from direct sunlight in a cool and dry place.
