This medication is used to prevent and treat vitamin D deficiency in adults at high risk for vitamin D deficiency due to malabsorption.

How it is given

Adult administration

Administer 300,000 IU of cholecalciferol as an intramuscular injection. Ensure that the total annual dose does not exceed 600,000 IU of cholecalciferol.

Precautions

This medicine contains vitamin D, so it is important to check the total vitamin D intake when taken with fortified foods or other vitamin D preparations. Regularly check the calcium levels in blood and urine to avoid excessive calcium levels; discontinue use if the levels exceed a certain threshold. If a high calcium intake is present, monitor blood and urine calcium levels more carefully. This medication should not be used in patients with certain diseases or conditions. For example, patients with allergies to this medication, hypercalcemia, kidney stones, renal dysfunction, immobile patients, pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid taking it. Various side effects such as headache, fatigue, myalgia, digestive disorders, dehydration, hypertension, and renal problems may occur, so consult healthcare professionals immediately if any abnormal symptoms arise. Regularly monitor blood vitamin D levels to prevent overdose, especially in patients with compromised kidney function or the elderly who should have kidney function tests periodically. There may be interactions with other medications, so inform healthcare professionals especially if taking anticonvulsants, diuretics, antacids, or warfarin. During pregnancy, hypercalcemia can be harmful to the fetus, so this medication should not be used, and breastfeeding women should also avoid it. In case of overdose, discontinue use immediately, reduce calcium intake, and assist calcium excretion through adequate fluid intake and diuresis.
