This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men. Osteoporosis is a condition where bone strength weakens, making it easy to suffer fractures; therefore, this medication is effective in strengthening bones and reducing fracture risk. Particularly, postmenopausal women experience rapid bone density loss due to hormonal changes, making proper treatment and prevention important. This medication helps maintain bone health and improve bone loss, supporting a healthy lifestyle.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults: Take 1 tablet orally once a week. Food may interfere with the absorption of this medication, so take it at least 30 minutes before breakfast or at least 2 hours apart from any food or beverage intake throughout the day. Take it upright with a sufficient amount of pure water (170-230 ml); do not chew or suck the tablet. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it.

Child dose

Safety and efficacy in children and adolescents during growth have not been established.

Precautions

This medication may irritate the stomach and esophageal mucosa, potentially leading to esophagitis, esophageal ulcers, and erosions. If symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, pain behind the sternum, or heartburn occur during use, immediately stop taking the medication and consult a physician. This medication should be taken with a sufficient amount of water, and for at least 30 minutes after taking it, lying down should be avoided to reduce the risk of esophageal irritation. Patients with conditions causing delayed esophageal clearance, such as esophageal stricture or achalasia, those with hypocalcemia, and patients with severe renal impairment should not use this medication. Additionally, patients with genetic conditions such as lactose intolerance should not take this medication. While taking this medication, it is advisable not to take other medications or foods containing polyvalent cations such as calcium, magnesium, or iron together. Before taking and during treatment, ensure adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, and take supplements if necessary after consulting with a physician. Patients undergoing dental surgery or with oral infections are at risk for jaw osteonecrosis and may require dental evaluation prior to treatment. If pregnant or breastfeeding, it is advisable to avoid taking this medication or consult a physician. Elderly patients can use it without special precautions, but adherence to the dosage regimen is essential. In case of overdose, hypocalcemia may occur, and immediate contact with a medical institution is necessary, with gastric lavage or calcium supplementation treatment possible as required. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container for safety.
