Improvement of symptoms related to the stomach (ulcers, inflammation) and excessive stomach acid, and relief of constipation
This medication helps improve symptoms related to gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, and excessive gastric acid secretion. It is also used to relieve constipation. Therefore, it is used effectively for treating stomach-related diseases and constipation.
For gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, and excessive stomach acid: 0.5-1g of magnesium oxide is taken orally in several divided doses per day. For constipation: 2g per day is taken orally in 1-2 divided doses. The initial dose should be the minimum amount, and the dosage should be gradually increased or decreased based on the shape and condition of the stool.
This drug should not be used in patients with severely impaired kidney function. In cases of weakened kidney function, magnesium may accumulate excessively in the body and pose risks. It is also advisable not to administer this drug to patients with diarrhea, as it may worsen the condition. Use this drug cautiously in patients with heart problems, those with hypermagnesemia, and elderly patients over 65 years old, as these individuals may experience side effects more easily. Taking this medication may occasionally lead to gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea. If a large amount is taken for an extended period, blood magnesium levels may rise, so it is important to monitor the condition and reduce the dosage or temporarily discontinue use if abnormalities occur. If dizziness, a slow pulse, severe drowsiness, confusion, shortness of breath, muscle weakness, dry mouth, or vomiting occurs after taking the drug, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor or pharmacist. It is recommended to bring the medicine's leaflet with you during the consultation. If symptoms of magnesium toxicity occur, treatment can be administered with potassium salt injections, so be vigilant about such symptoms. This drug may interfere with the absorption of certain antibiotics known as tetracyclines, so it is best not to take them together. Additionally, this drug may alter the environment in the gastrointestinal tract, affecting the absorption or excretion of other medications, so caution is necessary when taken concurrently. If taken in large quantities with milk or calcium preparations, it may lead to symptoms such as hypercalcemia and milk-alkali syndrome, so monitor symptoms closely and discontinue use if abnormalities occur. Lastly, if this drug is in capsule form, it can absorb moisture or carbon dioxide from the air, so it is important to avoid contact with moisture and air during storage.
