Improvement of selenium deficiency
This medication is used to supply selenium to patients with selenium deficiency that cannot be sufficiently supplemented by nutrition alone. Selenium plays an important antioxidant role in the human body, and because deficiency can lead to various health problems, this medication effectively supplements selenium to improve these issues.
Inject 100μg of selenium intramuscularly or intravenously per day. If necessary, the dose may be increased up to 200μg per day. When administered as an additional injection to total parenteral nutrition (TPN) basic injection, the daily dose should be 100μg of selenium.
This medication contains selenium, and should not be used in patients with selenium poisoning. Those who are allergic to this medication or its components should avoid administration. Pain or rarely allergic reactions may occur at the injection site, and if symptoms such as dermatitis, bad odor from sweat, hair loss, anxiety, or vomiting occur, administration should be immediately discontinued. Care must be taken to avoid precipitation when mixing with other intravenous solutions, and selenium may precipitate and not be absorbed by the body if the acidity (pH) of the solution is too low or if used with reducing agents such as vitamin C. It is safer not to use if there is any precipitation or color change after mixing. This medication contains sodium, so patients who require low sodium dietary control should consider this. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should only use this medication when the therapeutic benefits are deemed greater than the risks, as fetal deformities have been reported in animal studies. For women who are breastfeeding, it is recommended to discontinue breastfeeding or the use of this medication as its safety has not been established. In case of overdose, symptoms such as garlic breath, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may occur, and long-term excessive use may affect the growth of nails and hair and cause neurological disorders. In the case of overdose, gastric lavage, diuresis, or high-dose vitamin C administration may be necessary, and in severe cases, dialysis may be required to remove selenium. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, in a sealed container to prevent exposure to air and moisture, at a cool temperature between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. It should also be kept away from direct sunlight and stored in a dry location to maintain its effectiveness.
