Improvement of selenium deficiency
Selenium deficiency is generally hard to supplement through dietary intake alone. This medication is used to effectively provide selenium to patients who have difficulty in recovering from deficiency.
Administer 100 μg of selenium by intramuscular or intravenous injection daily. If necessary, the dose may be increased to 200 μg daily. When administered as an additional dose to the basic total parenteral nutrition (TPN) injection, the daily dosage should be 100 μg of selenium.
This drug contains selenium and should not be used in patients with symptoms of selenium toxicity. Patients allergic to this drug or its ingredients should not be administered this medication. There may be rare occurrences of pain or allergic reactions during injection, and symptoms such as dermatitis, odor during sweating or breathing, hair loss, anxiety, nausea, etc. should lead to immediate discontinuation of use. Care should be taken when mixing with other intravenous solutions, as a low acidity (pH) of the solution or mixing with reducing agents like vitamin C may cause selenium to precipitate, resulting in poor absorption in the body. If there is any precipitation or color change in the mixed solution, do not use. Also, this drug contains sodium, so patients requiring a low-sodium diet should take this into account. The drug should be used cautiously in pregnant women or women of childbearing potential only when its benefits outweigh the risks, as fetal malformations have been reported in animal studies. Safety has not been established in lactating women, and it is recommended to discontinue breastfeeding or the administration of the drug. In case of overdose, symptoms such as a garlic odor from the mouth, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may occur, and chronic overdose may affect nail and hair growth and cause neurological disorders. In the event of an overdose, selenium can be removed through gastric lavage, inducing urination, or high-dose vitamin C. In very severe cases, dialysis may be necessary. The use of a drug called dimercaprol should be avoided during this time as it may exacerbate selenium toxicity. Store out of reach of children, in a cool, dry place away from light, and use it immediately after opening. Transferring to another container may cause issues with quality maintenance and safety, so caution should be taken.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This drug should be stored in a sealed container to avoid contact with air, maintaining a temperature between 1°C and 30°C. It is also important to store it in a dark place to protect it from light exposure.
