This medication is used in conjunction with diet to lower total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo B, triglycerides, and non-HDL-cholesterol levels, and to increase HDL-cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It is particularly beneficial for those at high risk for atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia. Before drug therapy, it is important to identify and treat any other causes of dyslipidemia, such as diabetes or hypothyroidism, if necessary, and to regularly check lipid levels. Such medications are used in conjunction with a diet that limits saturated fat and cholesterol intake, and is applied when improvements are difficult with diet alone. Appropriate lipid testing and treatment is also needed when a patient is hospitalized due to an acute coronary event. This medication is used effectively to improve dyslipidemia.
