Prevention of zinc deficiency and improvement of nutritional status.
Supplementing zinc for patients receiving Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) is very important. Zinc is an essential mineral that supports immune function and aids in wound healing. TPN can lead to zinc deficiency because nutrients are provided without passing through the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, zinc supplementation can help improve nutritional status and prevent complications. Zinc supplementation is used to maintain the overall health of TPN patients.
Use as prescribed by the physician, checking plasma trace element levels to guide dosage adjustments. Metabolically stable TPN patients: 2.5 to 4 mg/day. Adult patients with fluid loss from the small intestine: Additional 12.2 mg/L (amount of fluid loss) or additional 17.1 mg/kg (excretion). Acute burn state: 4.5 to 6 mg/day.
Under 5 years: 100 ug/kg/day Premature infants weighing less than 3 kg: 300 ug/kg/day.
This medication should not be injected directly into a peripheral vein without dilution. This is because administering directly into a peripheral vein can cause phlebitis or zinc may cause damage to the kidneys. The amount of zinc in this medication is very small, so toxic symptoms are rarely observed. When using this medication with other nutritional fluids, it is important to maintain sterility, and it is advisable to use specific equipment called a layer plate. Before administration, be sure to check for precipitation or discoloration in the solution visually. Zinc and copper can interact with each other, so the levels of copper and zinc in the blood should be regularly monitored in planning administration. This medication is mainly excreted through the intestines and kidneys, so caution is required for individuals with problems in these organs, as zinc can accumulate in the body. This medication should only be used in pregnant or nursing women when the benefits are judged to outweigh the risks, as its safety has not been fully established. Zinc can cross the placenta and may also be present in breast milk. Overdose may result in symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, dizziness, abdominal pain, drowsiness, and ataxia, so caution is advised. Calcium intake can help prevent zinc toxicity to some extent. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in a dry place at room temperature in its original packaging. Additionally, as it does not contain preservatives, any unused portion must be discarded.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to prevent contact with air and is best kept at a temperature between 1 and 30 degrees Celsius at room temperature. Proper storage will maintain the medication's effectiveness and prevent degradation.
