This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men. Osteoporosis is a condition where the bone density decreases, increasing the risk of fractures. This medicine helps to strengthen bones and prevent fractures. Therefore, it is effective in improving bone health issues related to osteoporosis.

How to take

Adult dose

Take 1 tablet of this medication orally once a week. Since food may interfere with absorption, it should be taken at least 30 minutes before breakfast or at least 2 hours apart from food or drink intake at any other time of the day. It should be taken with a sufficient amount of plain water (170–230 mL) while sitting upright, and it is important not to lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it.

Precautions

This medication may irritate the mucosa of the stomach and esophagus, which can lead to conditions such as esophagitis, esophageal ulcer, and esophageal erosion. Therefore, if symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or heartburn occur during treatment, it is important to stop taking the medication immediately and consult a doctor. It is essential to take it with a sufficient amount of water and not to lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it. This medication should not be used in patients with esophageal strictures or achalasia, hypocalcemia, or severe renal impairment. Additionally, patients with lactose intolerance should not take this medication. During treatment, side effects such as indigestion, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, rash, and itching may occur, so inform a doctor about any abnormal symptoms. Rarely, jaw necrosis, serious skin reactions, or liver dysfunction may occur, and caution is necessary. The safety of this medication during pregnancy has not been established, so pregnant women should avoid taking it, and breastfeeding women should either discontinue medication or breastfeeding. Safety and efficacy have not been established for use in children. Elderly patients show similar safety to general adults, but caution is advised during treatment. In the case of overdose, symptoms of hypocalcemia may occur, so consult healthcare professionals immediately; calcium supplementation or gastric lavage may be necessary. This medication may interfere with the absorption of other medications containing calcium, magnesium, iron, aluminum, etc., so it should be taken with intervals from them.
