This medication is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It is also effective in treating osteoporosis in men. Specifically, it helps increase bone density and reduce the risk of fractures, thereby improving bone health. It plays a beneficial role in reducing complications related to osteoporosis and in maintaining healthy bones. It is used for those with osteoporosis to enhance bone strength and maintain bone structure.

How to take

Adult dose

Adult: Take one tablet orally once a week. Food may interfere with the absorption of this medication; therefore, take it at least 30 minutes before breakfast or at least 2 hours before or after meals or drinks. Take it with a sufficient amount of plain water (170-230 mL) in an upright position, and do not chew or suck the tablet. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it.

Pediatric: The safety and efficacy for children and adolescents in growth phases have not been established.

Precautions

This drug may irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, leading to risks of esophageal diseases such as esophagitis or esophageal ulcers. Take this medication with a sufficient amount of water, and do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it. If symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, pain behind the breastbone, or heartburn occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. This drug should not be administered to patients with delayed esophageal transit, hypocalcemia, or severe renal impairment. Additionally, patients with lactose intolerance or specific inherited metabolic disorders should not take this drug. While taking this medication, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, or abdominal pain may occur, and in rare cases, serious gastrointestinal conditions such as gastric ulcers or duodenitis may develop. Reports of bone pain, joint pain, and muscle pain have been noted, and skin rashes or itching may also occur. Consult a dental specialist regarding the risk of jaw necrosis if dental treatment is needed. Also, if there is pain or discharge from the ear while taking this medication, consider the possibility of external auditory canal necrosis. It is advisable not to take this medication in conjunction with drugs or foods containing divalent cations such as calcium, magnesium, or iron, and to avoid eating for a certain time before and after taking it. Use of this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be approached with caution, and it is recommended to discontinue use or stop breastfeeding during treatment. Safety for children has not been established, and no special precautions are needed for the elderly. In case of overdose, serum calcium and phosphorus levels may decrease, which can lead to symptoms of hypocalcemia; thus, calcium supplementation and gastric lavage may be necessary if required. Keep this medication out of reach of children, and do not transfer it to another container.

Serious side effects

Hives, severe swelling (edema), chest tightness, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, pallor (severe allergic reaction), high fever with severe rash, blisters, skin shedding, pain in oral/eye mucosa (severe skin reaction), difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, asthma attack, respiratory distress accompanied by cough and fever, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), general extreme lethargy (liver disturbance), sudden and severe headache.

Mild side effects

Nausea, diarrhea, gastritis, gastrointestinal disorders, headache, weakness, chest pain, hypertension, itching, rash, joint pain, muscle pain, bone pain, pharyngitis, rhinitis, pneumonia, urinary tract infection, nausea, constipation, indigestion, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, facial swelling, hair loss, dysosmia, hematuria, palpitations, increased sweating, facial flushing, burning sensation, kidney stones, belching, dry mouth, various mild to moderate symptoms such as blood and lymphatic disorders.

Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.

Storage

Store this medication in a tightly closed container to prevent air or moisture ingress and keep it at room temperature between 1°C and 30°C. Proper storage will help maintain the efficacy of the medication over time.
