Summary

Main use
Treatment of gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis
Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
Typically administered orally at a dose of 1 tablet twice daily, irrespective of meals, once in the morning and before bedtime. 1) Gastric and duodenal ulcers: Administer 1 tablet twice daily or 2 tablets once daily before sleep. Especially for duodenal ulcer patients, administering 2 tablets twice daily in the morning and before bedtime can achieve a higher treatment rate. The dosage remains the same for the prevention of ulcers from NSAID administration or in combination therapy to prevent gastric and duodenal ulcer occurrence during long-term NSAID usage. Generally, diseases caused by NSAIDs usually heal within 8 weeks, although for some patients, the healing period may be extended. For recurrent ulcer patients who showed excellent effects with short-term therapy, a maintenance dose of 1 tablet once daily at bedtime is given. 2) Gastroesophageal reflux disease: Administer 1 tablet twice daily for 8 weeks, or 2 tablets once daily before bed. However, patients with moderate symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux can increase to 2 tablets 4 times a day. 3) Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: Start treatment at an initial dose of 1 tablet three times daily and may increase as needed. For severe cases, a daily dose of up to 6 g of ranitidine may be prescribed at the physician's discretion. 4) Peptic ulcer, acute stress ulcer, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to acute mucosal lesions: Transition to oral administration from injection when possible, with 1 tablet twice daily. 5) Pre-anesthetic administration (prevention of Mendelson's syndrome): Administer 1 tablet 2 hours before anesthesia induction. In this case, it is also beneficial to administer 1 tablet the night before surgery.

It is used to improve various gastric diseases and inflammation.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it is not administered to patients undergoing dialysis or those who have had an allergic reaction to this medication or its components, as well as patients with a history of acute porphyria. Additionally, it should not be used in patients with poor kidney function, those who have had upper gastrointestinal surgery, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, premature infants and newborns, and patients following a diet that restricts potassium intake. Care should be taken when administering this medication to patients with weakened liver function, a history of drug allergies, elderly patients, and those with a past history of kidney issues. In particular, there is a risk of gastrointestinal bleeding when taken with NSAIDs, so their condition should be regularly monitored. This medication can mask symptoms of gastric cancer, so gastric ulcer patients or those over middle age with new dyspeptic symptoms should confirm that it is not a malignant disease before use. Patients with Helicobacter pylori-positive gastric or duodenal ulcers require bacterial eradication therapy. Caution is necessary for severely ill patients in intensive care, patients with hypophosphatemia, and those with swallowing difficulties, as this medication can cause various side effects in some patients, including severe allergic reactions, blood abnormalities, liver dysfunction, arrhythmias, gastrointestinal symptoms, neurological disturbances, muscle pain, skin rashes. If any abnormal symptoms occur, administration should be stopped immediately and medical consultation should be sought. Long-term use should be avoided, and if there is no therapeutic effect, switching to another medication is necessary. Regular blood tests and liver and kidney function tests are important. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur while taking this medication, so driving or operating hazardous machinery should be avoided. There may be drug interactions, so it is imperative to inform healthcare professionals of any other medications being taken. This is especially true when taken with anticoagulants, antibiotics, or anticonvulsants. It is safest for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding to avoid this medication, and its safety in pediatric patients has not been established, hence it is not recommended. In case of overdose, emergency treatment such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary, and dialysis can be used to remove the drug if needed. This medication reduces gastric acid secretion which may promote bacterial growth in the gastrointestinal tract, so regular examinations, including ophthalmologic checks, are necessary during long-term use.
