Prevention of selenium deficiency
Supplementing selenium during Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) is important to prevent selenium deficiency in the body and to aid in antioxidant action. Selenium helps prevent cellular damage and enhances immunity. Therefore, appropriate selenium supplementation for TPN patients contributes to the recovery and maintenance of health.
In stable metabolic Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), inject 20 to 40 μg per day of selenium (this drug contains 40 μg/mL of selenium).
Inject 3 μg per kg of body weight per day.
This medication contains selenium and should not be used in patients with selenium toxicity. Excessive intake may lead to toxicity, so if abnormal symptoms occur, discontinue use immediately. Direct injection without dilution may cause inflammation, so it must be diluted before administration. Being a storage solution, it must be mixed with other solutions for use. Caution should be exercised when used in patients with poor kidney function or premature infants, and there is a toxicity risk with long-term parenteral administration due to aluminum content. Pain or allergic reactions may rarely occur during injection; consult a doctor or pharmacist if these symptoms arise. If symptoms such as eczema, odor, hair loss, or vomiting appear, discontinue use and consult a professional. Before administration, always check for any precipitates or discoloration in the solution and prepare under aseptic conditions. In cases of reduced kidney or gastrointestinal function, the amount of selenium should be adjusted, and for transfusion patients, blood selenium concentrations should be monitored continuously. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should only use this medication when the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks to the fetus. For breastfeeding women, as the safety of this drug has not been established, it is advisable to stop breastfeeding or discontinue the medication. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as nail and hair growth disturbances, dermatitis, gastrointestinal disturbances, vomiting, and unusual odors may occur. In severe cases, fatal symptoms such as vascular collapse, pulmonary hemorrhage, and gastric mucosal abnormalities may appear, requiring immediate treatment. In cases of overdose, measures to help eliminate selenium include gastric lavage, inducing diuresis, and high-dose vitamin C; dialysis may be necessary in extreme cases. Keep out of reach of children, store in a dry, cool place in the original packaging, and use immediately after opening. Be cautious as transferring to another container may result in quality degradation or risk of accidents.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
Store this medication in a sealed container to prevent air and moisture ingress. It is recommended to maintain a storage temperature between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius to preserve the efficacy and prevent deterioration of the drug.
