Improvement of nutritional status through selenium supplementation
Selenium, as an essential trace element in patients receiving Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), helps reduce oxidative stress in the body and supports immune function. Particularly in cases of long-term TPN, selenium deficiency may occur, making appropriate selenium supplementation necessary. Selenium plays a role in preventing cellular damage and maintaining normal metabolic functions. Therefore, selenium supplementation is important for maintaining the overall health status of patients and preventing complications. For this reason, selenium supplementation during TPN is recommended to support effective treatment.
Inject 20 to 40 μg of selenium per day (this drug contains selenium 40 μg/mL) during stable metabolic total parenteral nutrition (TPN).
Inject 3 μg per kg of body weight per day. Monitor plasma selenium concentration frequently to refer during subsequent dosing.
This drug contains selenium and should not be used in patients with selenosis. Toxicity may occur with overdose, so use should be discontinued immediately if symptoms appear. When administered intravenously, dilution is required before administration to the peripheral vein to prevent phlebitis. This drug is a storage solution and must be mixed with other solutions for administration. Caution should be exercised when administering to patients with poor kidney function or preterm infants, as there is a risk of aluminum toxicity with long-term parenteral administration. Pain or allergic reactions may rarely occur during injection, so any symptoms should be consulted with a physician or pharmacist. If symptoms such as dermatitis, foul odor during sweating and breathing, hair loss, restlessness, or vomiting occur, discontinue use and consult a specialist. Before administration, ensure there are no precipitates or discoloration and prepare in an aseptic environment. Selenium is excreted through the kidneys and digestive system, so dosage may need to be adjusted in cases of kidney or gastrointestinal disorders. In transfused patients, selenium concentration should be continuously measured considering the amount of blood transfusion. This drug should only be administered to pregnant or potentially pregnant women when the benefit is deemed greater than the risk, as it may affect the fetus. Safety has not been established in nursing mothers, and it is recommended to discontinue nursing or medication administration. In the case of overdose, abnormalities in nail and hair growth, dermatitis, oral abnormalities, gastrointestinal disorders, tension, depression, a metallic taste, vomiting, and garlic-like odor from the mouth may occur. In cases of acute overdose, serious vascular and pulmonary symptoms can lead to death, requiring immediate gastric lavage, diuresis induction, and vitamin C administration, and in severe cases, dialysis may be necessary. Keep out of reach of children, use immediately after opening, and do not transfer to another container.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This drug should be stored in a sealed container to prevent the ingress of air and moisture. It is important to maintain the storage temperature between 15 to 30 degrees Celsius at room temperature.
