Prevention of zinc deficiency and improvement of nutritional status
Supplementing zinc for patients receiving Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) is important to prevent zinc deficiency and maintain immune function. Zinc is an essential mineral for wound healing and cell division, and it is involved in various metabolic processes in the body. Particularly when receiving nutrition through TPN, zinc intake may become inadequate, making proper supplementation necessary. Zinc supplementation helps improve the overall recovery and health status of patients. Therefore, it is used to optimize nutritional status and maintain health through zinc supplementation during TPN administration.
Metabolically stable TPN patients: 2.5 to 4 mg/day Adults with fluid loss from the small intestine: an additional 12.2 mg/L (fluid loss amount) or an additional 17.1 mg/kg (excretion amount) Acute burn state: 4.5 to 6 mg/day Use as prescribed by a physician while monitoring trace element levels in plasma to guide dosage adjustments.
Children under 5 years: 100 ug/kg/day Premature infants weighing less than 3 kg: 300 ug/kg/day
This drug should not be injected directly into a peripheral vein in an undiluted state. This is because direct injection may cause phlebitis and increase the risk of kidney damage from zinc. Toxic symptoms from this drug are rare due to very low zinc content. When mixing this drug with other nutrient solutions, it is essential to maintain sterile conditions, and it is advisable to work in a laminar flow environment. Before administration, carefully check for any precipitation or discoloration. Zinc and copper can interact with each other; therefore, regularly testing blood levels of copper and zinc should be considered in the dosing plan. This drug is excreted through the small intestine and kidneys, so caution is necessary for patients with issues in excretory organs as zinc may accumulate in the body. The safety of this drug during pregnancy or in women who may become pregnant is uncertain, so it should only be used when the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks. Since zinc can cross the placenta and may also be present in breast milk, caution is advised for nursing mothers as well. In cases of overdose, serious symptoms such as vomiting, dehydration, dizziness, and abdominal pain may occur, so caution is necessary. Calcium intake may help reduce zinc toxicity. This drug should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its packaged state in a dry place at room temperature.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This drug should be stored in a sealed container to prevent air or moisture ingress and is best kept at a temperature between 1 degree and 30 degrees Celsius. Proper storage will maintain the drug’s effectiveness and allow for safe use.
