Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication effectively aids patients with type 2 diabetes in controlling their blood sugar when used alongside diet and exercise. The combination of gemigliptin and metformin stabilizes blood sugar levels and is very helpful in diabetes management. Therefore, this medication is used to improve blood sugar control.
The dosage of this medication should be individualized based on the patient's current treatment, efficacy, and tolerability. This medication is generally administered with the evening meal, with gradual dose escalation to reduce gastrointestinal side effects associated with metformin. - The 50/500 mg extended-release tablet or the 50/1000 mg extended-release tablet should be taken once daily, one tablet at a time. - Patients taking the 25/500 mg extended-release tablet or 25/1000 mg extended-release tablet should take two tablets simultaneously once daily. - For patients not currently being treated with metformin and who require 50 mg of gemigliptin, the recommended starting dose is one tablet of gemigliptin 50 mg/metformin 500 mg extended-release once daily, with gradual dose escalation to minimize gastrointestinal side effects from metformin. - For patients unable to achieve adequate blood sugar control with metformin monotherapy, or combination therapy with sulfonylureas and insulin, the initial dosage of this medication should provide gemigliptin 50 mg once daily and the existing dose of metformin. When converting from immediate-release metformin to extended-release formulations, blood glucose control should be closely monitored, and dosage adjustments made as appropriate. - When this medication is used in combination with sulfonylureas or insulin, reducing the doses of the sulfonylureas or insulin may be necessary to minimize the risk of hypoglycemia. - For patients transitioning to this medication from a combination therapy of gemigliptin and metformin, the initial dosage can start at the existing doses of gemigliptin and metformin. Blood sugar control should be closely monitored, and proper dosage adjustments must be made during this transition. The maximum recommended daily dose is gemigliptin 50 mg and extended-release metformin 2000 mg. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been specifically evaluated in patients transitioning from other antidiabetic medications. Any changes in treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes should occur under careful monitoring due to the potential for significant changes in blood sugar control. This medication should be swallowed whole and must not be crushed, cut, or chewed.
This medication is an antidiabetic agent that helps control blood sugar. However, a serious side effect called lactic acidosis, which occurs when excessive lactic acid builds up in the body, can occur very rarely. This may pose a life-threatening risk, so immediate medical attention is necessary if symptoms occur. Caution is advised when taking this medication in conjunction with insulin or other antidiabetic medications, as severe hypoglycemia may occur. Patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or similar medications, those with serious kidney impairment, severe heart function decline, or those with acute heart disease or sepsis should not take this medication. If you are scheduled to receive iodine contrast agents used in radiation tests, you should discontinue this medication 48 hours prior to the test and only resume it after confirming normal kidney function. It is recommended that pregnant or breastfeeding women avoid taking this medication. In cases of suspected acute pancreatitis, this medication should be discontinued immediately, and caution is advised for those with a history of pancreatitis. This medication may lower vitamin B12 levels with long-term use, so yearly blood tests are recommended for monitoring. If sudden severe abdominal pain, muscle pain, shortness of breath, or weakness occurs while taking this medication, immediate consultation with a healthcare provider is necessary. Additionally, this medication may cause allergic reactions, skin rashes, hives, and joint pain in some patients, so any abnormal symptoms should be discussed with a doctor. Elderly patients or those with decreased kidney function should be especially cautious during use and should undergo regular kidney function tests. In case of overdose, immediate medical attention should be sought, and blood dialysis may be necessary to remove the drug if needed. Lastly, note that some components of this medication may be expelled unchanged in the stool, so there is no need for concern. However, if frequently observed, inform your healthcare provider.
