Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

View approved original text

This medication assists adult patients with type 2 diabetes in achieving smooth blood sugar control in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy. It is especially used for those who do not achieve sufficient blood sugar control with metformin monotherapy and is suitable as a replacement option for those who have previously used the combination therapy of rosiglitazone and metformin. It helps to effectively improve blood sugar control in this way.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is generally administered once daily with dinner, and the dosage is adjusted gradually to reduce gastrointestinal side effects associated with metformin. For the 0.5/1000 mg extended-release tablet, take 1 tablet once daily. Patients taking the 0.25/500 mg, 0.25/750 mg, or 0.25/1000 mg extended-release tablet should take 2 tablets at the same time once daily. Maximum recommended daily dosage.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with weak heart function, and immediate medical attention is required if symptoms of heart failure appear. As a thiazolidinedione drug, this medication can cause fluid retention, which may worsen heart failure; therefore, caution is advised. The metformin component can rarely cause a serious side effect known as lactic acidosis; if symptoms occur, immediate hospitalization is necessary. Additionally, this medication may pose a risk of hypoglycemia when used in conjunction with other diabetes medications, so blood sugar levels should be closely monitored. Patients with severe impairment of kidney or liver function, patients with severe heart failure, and pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication. Regular liver and kidney function tests should be conducted during treatment, and any abnormal symptoms should be reported to healthcare professionals immediately. Excessive alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects from this medication and should be avoided. Premenopausal women should use appropriate contraceptive methods as ovulation may be stimulated by this medication, increasing the likelihood of pregnancy. The use of this medication should be suspended for a certain period before and after surgery, and the dosage should not be changed arbitrarily. This medication may result in side effects such as weight gain or edema, so it is important to consult with a doctor if symptoms occur. Caution is particularly advised for children and elderly patients, with elderly patients needing to have their kidney function checked regularly. This medication can interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform healthcare professionals of any other medications being taken. During the administration of the medication, the prescribed dosage and regimen must be strictly followed. In case a dose is missed, do not take double the next day.
