Improvement of atherosclerotic symptoms such as ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction, and reduction of the risk of stroke and thromboembolism.
This medication is used to improve atherosclerotic symptoms in adult patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or peripheral arterial disease. It also alleviates atherosclerotic symptoms due to cardiovascular issues in patients with acute coronary syndrome who have undergone or will undergo coronary interventional procedures or coronary artery bypass surgery. This medication helps reduce the risk of stroke and thromboembolism in patients with atrial fibrillation who have one or more vascular risk factors and for whom vitamin K antagonists are not suitable and the risk of bleeding is low. Therefore, it is effectively used for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and strokes.
1. For patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or peripheral arterial disease, clopidogrel should be taken orally once a day at a dose of 75 mg. 2. For patients with acute coronary syndrome, initiate with a loading dose of 300 mg orally once a day on the first day, then maintain with a dose of 75 mg orally once a day. In this case, aspirin 75 - 325 mg should be taken in combination once daily. 3. For patients with atrial fibrillation.
This medication helps prevent platelets from aggregating, allowing blood to flow properly. However, individuals with a genetically reduced function of the specific enzyme CYP2C19 may find that this medication does not work effectively, and in such cases, alternative treatment methods should be considered. Additionally, using this medication with drugs that activate CYP2C19 may lead to an accumulation of the medication in the body, increasing the risk of bleeding, so they should not be used together. Patients with an allergy to this medication or experiencing bleeding, patients with severe liver dysfunction, breastfeeding women, and those unable to break down lactose due to specific genetic issues should not take this medication. Patients at high risk of bleeding, those with liver or kidney dysfunction, individuals who have recently experienced a stroke, patients with ongoing hypertension, elderly patients, and those with low body weight should use this medication with caution. Especially, using this medication along with other drugs that increase bleeding risk may further increase the risk of bleeding. Patients scheduled for surgery should discontinue this medication 5 to 7 days before the procedure and resume it once hemostasis is achieved post-surgery. While taking this medication, bleeding may take longer to stop, so if bleeding is suspected, the doctor should be notified immediately. Patients on this medication should inform healthcare providers when undergoing surgery or starting new medications. Rarely, severe blood disorders with a rapid decline in platelets may occur, so if symptoms of fever or infection develop, tests should be conducted immediately. This medication may cause side effects such as indigestion, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, rash, etc., and bleeding symptoms should be monitored carefully. During pregnancy, this medication is not known to pose significant risks to the fetus, but due to the risk of bleeding during delivery, it is recommended to stop taking this medication prior to labor. Breastfeeding women should discuss with healthcare providers whether to continue breastfeeding, as this medication can be found in breast milk. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children have not been adequately established. Elderly patients may have increased bleeding risk due to diminished kidney or liver function, requiring careful monitoring during treatment. In cases of overdose, the risk of bleeding may increase, and while there is no specific antidote, treatment such as platelet transfusion may be necessary in severe cases of bleeding. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
