This medicine is used for the treatment of essential hypertension and plays an important role in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It is particularly effective in patients over 55 years of age who are at high risk and have intolerances to ACE inhibitors, reducing the risk of death from myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases. It is also beneficial for diabetic patients with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, transient ischemic attack, or evidence of end-organ damage. Thus, it is effectively used in the prevention and treatment of various cardiovascular diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

For essential hypertension, the recommended dosage is 40 mg of Telmisartan once daily taken orally with water, regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, a dosage of 20 mg once daily may also be effective, and if necessary, it can be increased to up to 80 mg once daily. The maximum antihypertensive effect is seen 4-8 weeks after starting treatment. For the purpose of reducing cardiovascular disease risk, it is recommended to take 80 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy; therefore, it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Patients with allergies to this medication or its components, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver disease or bile flow disorders, patients with hereditary angioedema, and those with diabetes or severe kidney disease should not take this medication. Elderly patients or those with hyperkalemia, patients with impaired liver function, patients with heart valve disease or ischemic heart disease, patients with gastrointestinal diseases, patients with renal artery stenosis, and patients with severe kidney impairment should take this medication cautiously. During treatment, regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and serum potassium levels is required, and if any abnormal symptoms occur, consult a doctor immediately. This medication lowers blood pressure but can cause side effects such as hypotension, dizziness, headache, dyspepsia, cough, skin rash, and others, so caution is necessary. In particular, if symptoms of angioedema such as swelling of the face, lips, or tongue occur, the medication should be discontinued immediately, and emergency treatment should be sought. There may be interactions when taken with other antihypertensives, diuretics, potassium supplements, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), lithium, etc., so you must inform your doctor. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not use this medication, and breastfeeding women should preferably discontinue breastfeeding if taking this medication. Safety and efficacy in children and adolescents under 18 years have not been established, and therefore it is not recommended. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, arrhythmia, dizziness, and acute kidney failure may occur, so immediate medical attention is necessary for appropriate treatment. Keep this medication out of the reach of children, do not transfer it to other containers, and it is best to open the packaging just before taking.
