Improvement of cholesterol and lipids in hypercholesterolemia (primary, homozygous familial) and mixed hyperlipidemia
This medication helps lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidemia and increases the levels of good cholesterol, HDL cholesterol. It is also used as an adjunctive therapy when concurrent or alternative treatment is difficult for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. This medication should be taken with an appropriate diet, and it is important to first identify and treat any secondary causes such as diabetes or hypothyroidism. Regular monitoring of blood lipid levels is recommended during treatment to assess effectiveness, especially for patients who have had an acute coronary event where measurement soon after hospitalization is advised. This medication is effective in reducing the risk of hypercholesterolemia and related cardiovascular diseases.
This medication is administered once daily in the evening, regardless of meals. For patients with primary hypercholesterolemia: the dosage ranges from 10/10 mg to 10/40 mg per day, with a generally recommended starting dose of 10/20 mg per day. Patients with less need for LDL cholesterol reduction may start with 10/10 mg once daily. The recommended dose for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10/40 mg once daily.
This medication may cause serious muscle-related side effects such as myopathy and rhabdomyolysis; therefore, immediately inform your doctor if you experience muscle pain or weakness. Patients with liver dysfunction should undergo liver function tests before taking this medication, and liver function should be monitored regularly during treatment. If symptoms of liver damage appear, use should be discontinued immediately. This medication can interact with several drugs, increasing the risk of myopathy, especially if taken with some antifungals, antibiotics, immunosuppressants, or certain heart medications, so it’s crucial to inform your doctor about all medications you are taking. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication, and if pregnancy is confirmed, they should stop taking it immediately. Breastfeeding women should also cease breastfeeding while taking this medication. For children and adolescents, safety and efficacy have not been adequately established, so it is generally not recommended except in special cases. Elderly patients may react more sensitively to this medication, and caution should be exercised in their administration.
