Treatment of hypertension and kidney disease (in patients with type 2 diabetes)
This medication is used to treat high blood pressure. It also helps to slow the progression of kidney disease in patients with high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Therefore, it is effective for the prevention and treatment of complications associated with high blood pressure.
For adults with hypertension: The initial and maintenance dose is 50 mg of Losartan Potassium taken orally once daily. If the therapeutic effect is insufficient, the dose may be increased to a maximum of 100 mg once daily or divided into two doses. For patients with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease related to hypertension: The usual dose is 50 mg once daily, which may be increased to a maximum of 100 mg once daily depending on blood pressure. It is recommended to start with an initial dose of 25 mg in patients at risk of excessive blood pressure reduction.
Children and adolescents aged 6 years and older: (1) Weighing 20 kg to less than 50 kg: Administer 25 mg once daily, with a maximum increase to 50 mg once daily possible. (2) Weighing 50 kg or more
This drug can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters. Therefore, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take it. Patients with allergies to this drug, severely impaired liver function, certain genetic diseases, and primary hyperaldosteronism should not use it. Caution should be exercised in elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, patients with impaired liver or kidney function, and patients with heart valve disease or ischemic heart disease. This drug lowers blood pressure, potentially leading to serious side effects such as hypotension and renal failure, so regular monitoring of blood pressure and kidney function is necessary. During treatment, it is advisable not to use potassium supplements, potassium-containing salt substitutes, or potassium-sparing diuretics, and to avoid grapefruit juice. Angioedema, which causes swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, may occasionally occur, so immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary if such symptoms arise. Side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, cough, dyspepsia, and muscle pain; if symptoms are severe, consult a doctor. It is advisable for pregnant or nursing women to avoid this medication, and if pregnancy is confirmed during treatment, it should be discontinued immediately and healthcare professionals should be consulted. This drug should not be administered to children, especially those under 6 years of age or those with significantly impaired kidney function. In case of overdose, hypotension and abnormal heart rate may occur, and immediate hospital treatment is required. This drug should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
