Improvement of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men
This medication is used for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men.
As sodium alendronate, take 70 mg once weekly in the morning with a sufficient amount of water (170-230 mL) at least 30 minutes before consuming any food, beverage, or other medications. After taking it, do not lie down for at least 30 minutes and do not take it just before bedtime or immediately after waking up. Failure to follow the instructions may increase the risk of esophageal adverse reactions.
This medication can irritate the gastric and esophageal mucosa. Patients with Barrett's esophagus, dysphagia, esophageal disorders, gastritis, duodenitis, or ulcers should take it with caution. If symptoms such as dysphagia, pain behind the sternum, or heartburn occur while taking, discontinue and consult a physician immediately. It should be taken with a sufficient amount of water, and patients should not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it to reduce the risk of esophageal irritation. Patients with delayed esophageal transit, those unable to sit or stand upright, those allergic to this medication or its components, hypocalcemia patients, those with severe renal failure, and pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication. When taking this medication, sufficient calcium and vitamin D intake is necessary, and it is important to manage lifestyle habits such as weight-bearing exercises, smoking, and alcohol consumption. As a bisphosphonate, bone, joint, and muscle pain may occur, and severe cases may hinder activity, so consult a physician if symptoms arise. A rare side effect called jaw osteonecrosis has been reported, requiring attention to oral hygiene; consultation with a doctor before dental surgery is essential. Prolonged use may rarely cause stress fractures in the femur, so if pain persists, examinations are needed. Taking this drug with calcium supplements or antacids may interfere with its absorption, so intervals of at least 30 minutes should be maintained. Women who are pregnant or possibly pregnant, and nursing mothers should not take this medication, and safety in children or youths under 18 has not been established. Although elderly individuals can use it, caution is needed as some may have heightened sensitivity to the medication. This medication must be taken in the morning on an empty stomach with sufficient water and strict adherence to lying down for a certain period after taking.
