Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. The combination of sitagliptin and metformin acts together to effectively lower blood sugar levels and helps in managing blood glucose. Consequently, it reduces the risk of complications related to diabetes and helps maintain the patient’s health condition in a more stable manner.
This medication is generally taken twice daily with food. To reduce gastrointestinal adverse effects caused by metformin, dosage should be incrementally increased. 1. For patients currently not being treated with metformin: You may initially take this drug 50/500 mg twice daily, 1 tablet each time, and can increase to 50/1000 mg twice daily, 1 tablet each time. 2. For patients already on metformin treatment
This medication is a diabetes treatment that contains sitagliptin and metformin, which helps control blood sugar levels. During use, severe allergic reactions may occur, so if symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or throat arise, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor. There is a risk of acute pancreatitis, so if symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite occur, inform your healthcare provider promptly. Patients with severely impaired kidney function or at risk of acute kidney injury should not take this medication, and regular kidney function tests should be performed. Use of this medication should be avoided in conditions such as heart failure, severe infections, dehydration, or myocardial infarction. If undergoing iodine contrast tests, this medication should be halted for a certain period before and after the exam, and it should only be resumed after confirming normal kidney function. Pregnant or potentially pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers should not use this medication. This medication can cause hypoglycemia, so particularly when used with other antidiabetic agents such as insulin or sulfonylureas, blood sugar levels should be monitored frequently, and awareness of hypoglycemic symptoms is crucial. The metformin component can rarely cause a metabolic complication known as lactic acidosis, so if dehydration, severe infections, liver disease, or excessive alcohol intake occurs, discontinue use and consult a doctor. During treatment, if meal amounts are irregular or exercise levels increase suddenly, there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia, so caution is needed. Additionally, this medication may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency; thus, regular blood tests to check vitamin B12 levels are recommended for long-term use. If undergoing surgery, discontinue this medication 48 hours prior to the procedure and resume only after confirming normal kidney function post-surgery. The elderly are at a higher risk for decreased kidney function, so dosage adjustments and regular kidney function tests are necessary. Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment, and report any sudden symptoms or adverse reactions to your healthcare provider immediately.
