View approved original text

This medication is used to improve blood lipid levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It helps to particularly lower total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels, and increase levels of HDL-cholesterol, which is the good cholesterol. When used in conjunction with a diet, it can effectively regulate blood lipid imbalance, thus having a positive effect on the treatment of hyperlipidemia.

How to take

Adult dose

For adults, the usual starting dose is 1 to 2 mg of Pitavastatin Calcium once daily. If the LDL-cholesterol lowering effect is insufficient, the dose can be increased to a maximum of 4 mg daily. The dosage should be appropriately adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or longer.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, patients with allergies to the ingredients of this drug or with liver dysfunction, severe liver disease or bile duct obstruction, those taking cyclosporine, those with myopathy, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and children should not receive this medication. In addition, patients with impaired kidney function or a history of liver disease, those who consume alcohol excessively, patients with hypothyroidism, elderly patients, and those with muscle weakness should use this medication with caution. While taking this medication, various side effects such as muscle pain, weakness, liver dysfunction, thrombocytopenia, and allergic reactions may occur, and if symptoms appear, consultation with a physician should be sought immediately. In particular, serious muscle disease known as rhabdomyolysis may occur rarely, hence if muscle pain or weakness is experienced, administration should be suspended immediately. Regular liver function tests are required, and if liver enzyme levels rise, treatment should be discontinued and appropriate measures taken. This medication may interact with other drugs, especially if taken with cyclosporine or fibrates, niacin, or erythromycin, as this may increase the risk of renal function deterioration and muscle damage, therefore co-administration should be avoided or used with caution. Elderly patients may experience side effects more readily when taking this medication, thus dosage adjustment and caution are necessary. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and if pregnancy is confirmed, administration should be discontinued immediately. Finally, the safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established in children, hence it should not be used in pediatric patients. Lastly, this medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in its original container to prevent misuse or deterioration in quality.
