Effects in treating essential hypertension and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

This medication is used effectively to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and mortality due to cardiovascular diseases in high-risk patients aged 55 and older who are unable to take ACE inhibitors. It is particularly effective in reducing the risk of end-organ damage in high-risk diabetic patients or those with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, or transient ischemic attacks. Therefore, this drug is used not only for managing hypertension but also for reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Precautions

This medication can pose serious risks to the fetus and newborn during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. It should not be used by anyone allergic to this medication or its ingredients, pregnant or nursing women, patients with severe liver impairment or bile duct obstruction, patients with a history of angioedema, and those with certain kidney diseases. Elderly patients or those with hyperkalemia, liver impairment, or heart and kidney diseases should use this medication cautiously, and dosage adjustments may be necessary. During treatment, regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte status is essential to detect and manage adverse reactions early. Some patients may experience various side effects such as headaches, dizziness, cough, dyspepsia, myalgia, and skin rashes. If symptoms persist or worsen, consultation with a physician is recommended. This medication may cause hyperkalemia or worsen kidney function, so caution is particularly needed when taken with potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics. Since this medication has strong blood pressure-lowering effects, if symptoms of hypotension occur, patients should lie down and rest immediately and seek treatment if necessary. Concomitant use with other antihypertensives, diuretics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, etc., may cause interactions, so it is essential to inform healthcare providers of all medications currently being taken. Women who are planning to become pregnant or are pregnant should not take this medication. It is also advisable for nursing mothers to avoid using this medication. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children have not been established, and it is not recommended for use in this population. In cases of overdose, severe hypotension, arrhythmias, and renal failure may occur, necessitating immediate medical treatment. Store this medication out of reach of children, and use it only after opening the sealed packaging. Avoid transferring it to other containers. Use caution when driving or operating machinery, as dizziness or fainting may occur.
