This medication is used in the treatment of essential hypertension. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and mortality due to cardiovascular disease in patients over 55 years of age who are at high risk for cardiovascular disease, such as those with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, transient ischemic attack, or evidence of end-organ damage in diabetes. In other words, it is effectively used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

How to take

Adult dose

For the treatment of essential hypertension, Telmisartan should be taken orally with water once a day at a dose of 40 mg, regardless of meals. Based on patient response, a dose of 20 mg once daily may be effective, and can be increased to 80 mg once daily if necessary. For reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, a dose of 80 mg once daily is recommended. In patients with liver dysfunction, do not exceed 40 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication may cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn if administered to pregnant women; therefore, use should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. This medication should also not be used in patients with an allergy to it or with severe liver dysfunction, bile duct obstruction, or cholestasis. Patients with hereditary angioedema or a history of angioedema should not take this medication. Diabetic patients or those with significantly impaired kidney function should not take this medication in conjunction with certain other drugs, and elderly patients or those with hyperkalemia should use it with caution. Patients with heart or cerebrovascular diseases need to be careful as this medication may cause blood pressure to drop too low. Patients with gastrointestinal disorders or renal vascular problems should be especially careful when taking this medication. This medication has a blood pressure-lowering effect, but may occasionally cause side effects such as dizziness, headache, cough, dyspepsia, and skin rash. If symptoms of angioedema or severe allergic reactions, hyperkalemia, or deterioration of kidney function occur, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention. This medication may interact with other blood pressure medications, so if you are taking other drugs, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Women who are pregnant or nursing should ideally avoid this medication, and if it must be taken, do so under the guidance of a professional. Safety and efficacy in children under 18 years of age have not been established, so it is not recommended. Elderly patients should use this medication with care to avoid excessive drops in blood pressure, and caution is advised when driving or operating dangerous machinery due to possible dizziness. In case of overdose, symptoms like hypotension, dizziness, and renal dysfunction may occur; hence, the dosage should be strictly adhered to, and if abnormal symptoms arise, seek medical attention immediately. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and the tablets should be opened immediately before use.
