This medication is used in patients with essential hypertension whose blood pressure is not sufficiently controlled with monotherapy.

How to take

Adult dose

The recommended dosage is 1 tablet of valsartan 80 mg/hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg once daily, to be taken with a small amount of water regardless of meals. Valsartan 160 mg/hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg is applicable if prescribed. For patients with renal impairment classified as mild to moderate (creatinine clearance greater than 30 mL/min), dosage adjustment is not required. For patients with liver impairment, mild to moderate without cholestasis should not exceed 80 mg of valsartan daily.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Patients with allergies to any component of this medication or sulfonamide drugs, severe liver disease, kidney disease, or certain blood disorders should not use this medication. Caution should be exercised when using this medication in cases of electrolyte imbalance, impaired liver or kidney function, autoimmune diseases, the elderly, and patients with heart disease, and regular check-ups are necessary. The hydrochlorothiazide component can increase the risk of skin cancer due to sensitivity to sunlight; therefore, it is important to limit sun exposure and regularly check skin condition. This medication can cause dizziness or drowsiness, so care should be taken when driving or operating machinery. Potassium supplements or potassium-containing medications should not be taken without consulting a doctor, and if symptoms of hypotension occur due to blood pressure reduction, medical personnel should be informed immediately. During the use of this medication, regular blood tests to check electrolytes, kidney, and liver function are necessary. When used in combination with other medications, interactions may occur, so consultation with a doctor or pharmacist is essential, especially regarding lithium, NSAIDs, and other blood pressure medications. It is preferable for pregnant and breastfeeding women not to use this medication, and if exposure occurs during pregnancy, the condition of the fetus and newborn should be closely monitored.
