This medication is used to prevent and treat vitamin D deficiency in older adults, teenagers, and adults who are deficient in vitamin D.

How it is given

Adult administration

200,000 IU of cholecalciferol should be administered by intramuscular injection. For the elderly, 100,000 IU of cholecalciferol should be administered by intramuscular injection. The annual dose should not exceed 600,000 IU of cholecalciferol.

Child administration

For teenagers, 200,000 IU of cholecalciferol should be administered by intramuscular injection.

Precautions

This medicine contains vitamin D and should be used with caution to avoid overdose. When taking fortified foods with vitamin D or other vitamin D preparations, consider the total intake of vitamin D. Regularly check blood calcium levels, and discontinue this medication if calcium levels become too high. It is important to periodically test blood and urine calcium concentrations in the case of high calcium intake. This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, patients who are allergic to the components of this medication, have high blood calcium levels, have kidney stones or impaired kidney function, are immobile, have specific diseases, or are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid use. This medication may cause various side effects including headache, fatigue, muscle pain, indigestion, dehydration, high blood pressure, and kidney issues. Particularly, symptoms of elevated calcium or kidney stones and mental problems may occur, so consult medical personnel immediately if any abnormal symptoms occur. This medication should be used while monitoring blood levels of vitamin D and parathyroid hormone, and regular kidney function tests are necessary. Especially, elderly patients or those taking specific medications should be particularly cautious. It may interact with other medications, so be sure to inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking anticonvulsants, diuretics, antacids, anticoagulants, etc. Care should be taken, as changes in calcium levels or heart side effects may occur when taken with this medication. Do not take this medication during pregnancy, as overdose could harm the fetus. In children under 12 years old, safety and efficacy have not been established. In case of overdose, immediately discontinue taking it, reduce calcium intake, increase fluid intake, and take measures to promote diuresis.
