Improvement of cholesterol and lipids in hypercholesterolemia (primary, homozygous familial) and mixed hyperlipidemia
This medication is used to effectively reduce elevated total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. It also lowers apoB protein and triglyceride levels while increasing HDL-cholesterol levels, thereby improving the lipid balance in the blood. This medication is used in conjunction with a proper diet and served as an adjunctive therapy when there is insufficient response to diet and other non-drug treatments. Particularly, it can be used in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia as an adjunct to existing lipid-lowering therapy or as an alternative treatment. It is important to identify other secondary dyslipidemia causes before treatment and to simultaneously treat those underlying causes. This medication helps reduce the risk of atherosclerotic vascular diseases due to hypercholesterolemia.
This medication is administered once daily in the evening, regardless of meals. The dosage range for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia is 10/10 mg to 10/40 mg daily, with the generally recommended starting dose being 10/20 mg daily. Patients with a lesser need for lowering LDL-cholesterol may start with 10/10 mg daily. After initiating treatment or adjusting the dosage, monitor lipid levels in the blood at intervals of more than 4 weeks.
This medication helps lower cholesterol. However, caution is required as muscle problems may occur while taking this medication. If muscle pain or weakness, especially unexplained muscle pain, appears, inform your doctor immediately. This medication may affect liver function, so it should not be administered to patients with liver disease or elevated liver enzyme levels. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication, and women of childbearing potential should consult a doctor before taking it. Additionally, it should be noted that the risk of muscle damage may increase when taken with certain medications, so inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medications. Elderly patients or those with decreased kidney function should use this medication with caution, and regular blood tests are recommended to monitor muscle and liver function. Avoid taking this medication with grapefruit juice or certain antibiotics, antifungals, and immunosuppressants, and if necessary, follow the doctor's instructions. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so general treatment will be provided according to symptoms. Finally, long-term use of this medication may slightly increase the risk of diabetes, so blood sugar management is important.
