This medication helps lower elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, ApoB proteins, and triglycerides in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, particularly heterozygous familial and non-familial hypercholesterolemia, and mixed hyperlipidemia, while also increasing HDL cholesterol. It can additionally be used as an adjunct in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia or as monotherapy when other treatments are ineffective. This medication is administered alongside an appropriate diet and is recommended when diet alone is insufficient. Treatment of lipid-related diseases should be conducted after confirming any impact from other medical conditions or medications, with regular blood lipid testing for management. This medication plays a crucial role in lowering the risk of atherosclerotic vascular diseases due to hypercholesterolemia, contributing to the improvement of patient health.

Precautions

This medication may cause muscle-related side effects such as myopathy and rhabdomyolysis; therefore, if symptoms like muscle pain or weakness occur, consult a doctor immediately. This medication should not be used by those with hypersensitivity to its components, active liver disease patients, or during pregnancy and lactation. Especially during pregnancy, it can interfere with cholesterol biosynthesis essential for normal fetal development, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. This medication should not be taken in conjunction with certain potent CYP3A4 inhibitors, gemfibrozil, cyclosporine, or danazol as they increase the risk of myopathy. Additionally, patients who are genetically unable to digest lactose should avoid this medication. Patients with severe myasthenia gravis or ocular myasthenia should use this medication cautiously, and treatment should be discontinued if symptoms worsen. Liver function abnormalities may occur during treatment with this medication; therefore, patients with a history of liver disease or symptoms should undergo regular liver function tests. Due to numerous drug interactions, if taking other medications, be sure to inform your physician or pharmacist and exercise caution. This medication is also available for elderly patients; however, some elderly may be more sensitive to side effects, so caution is warranted. Women of childbearing potential should use appropriate contraceptive methods during treatment to avoid pregnancy and consult their physician if planning pregnancy. Nursing mothers should discontinue breastfeeding when taking this medication, and safety in children and adolescents has not been sufficiently confirmed, so it should be used cautiously. In the event of overdose, specific antidotes are unavailable; general treatment will be provided based on symptoms. Any unexplained muscle pain, weakness, tenderness, etc., during the course of this medication should be reported to a physician immediately, and regular check-ups and monitoring are necessary.
